Chapter 26: chapter 25 : Damon's Changes
The next day, Damon arrived at the Sheriff's office where John was locked up. He made a whole scene by reproaching the deputies for their disobedience to their leader but also their complicity with John because because of them, several "innocent people" including the mayor had perished because Jonathan Gilbert's weapon had become "defective" over time to the point of affecting even some sensitive humans.
Having the privilege of his high rank on the council and his close relationship with the Sheriff, he said the council had decided to ban John from the city.
He requested his release and the men carried out the orders after Liz confirmed the act to them over the radio.
Damon drove John away and out of town, he took John out of the Vehicle before biting him in the neck and tasting his blood.
Seeing that he no longer had any vervain in his blood, he forcefully searched him to remove any object or jewelry containing vervain as well as John's protective ring quickly while he could do absolutely nothing facing Damon alone in the woods.
John: What did you plan , Damon? Harper Freed I know he is a vampire like you.
Damon: I would have ripped your head off if he hadn't asked me to spare you. Harper thinks that we are indeed monsters, he believes that you are some kind of hero although hateful who does what he can to defend humans and you will laugh but I still think the same thing in a sens because of his therapy and this bastard is persuasive . If I was a human who knew about the presence of vampires, I would have been like you or I would have wished that someone like you was there to defend us but the thing is...I'm not human.
John: Don't take me for a fool, Damon.
Damon: Believe me, that's not all I have to do. However, a friend opened my eyes and I have to start thinking like someone my age.
John: Is this a joke ? You are a degenerate vampire who killed hundreds of people ago-(interrupted)
Damon: I'm not that vampire anymore...although you're starting to make me hungry for being so annoying. (grabs John's neck and uses mental compulsion) Elena doesn't want you in this town and you caused the death of the mayor and some innocent people to trap several vampires from the crypt, that's a lie but you believe it. You will go far, far from the city without contacting Katherine once and forgetting about her, only coming back if Elena or the council calls you back. Now take this car and go...
He handed him the keys and Jon started the car before driving off. Damon watched him leave, he was clearly much more of an adult because normally he would have killed John but the more he thought about what Harper had said to him.
The more he wondered if everything John was doing wasn't legitimate
because his daughter, his only child, had vampires around her.
What parent would want that for their child ? He really didn't like to admit it, but as hateful as John was, he was protecting humans and didn't deserve to die for it.
Additionally, he had to show up at the Lockwood house for the mayor's funeral and offer his condolences to the mayor's wife and son the next day.
At the funeral, Damon had just finished a discussion with Carol Lockwood when he saw Bonnie in the distance and he approached her to talk to the girl but as he greeted her, Bonnie looked at her with a certain hostility.
Damon: I know you hate me and I deserve it. Your grandmother gave her life because I stubbornly opened this tomb to look for a woman who never loved me. Even if I don't expect to be forgiven, I want to apologize to you for this and I will take responsibility for it.
Bonnie: You have no idea how bad that hurt me. Do you want to take responsibility for it? So die...
Damon: Okay, I understand. This woman was not only your grandmother but also the woman that my best friend loved the most, he suffered for it but (laughs) what's funny is that instead of ripping my heart out chest it helps me be a better vampire.
Bonnie: Are you talking about...Doctor Freed?
Damon: Your doctor, my psychiatrist and best friend. Where and when do you want me to do this ?
Bonnie: What ?
Damon: Die. You told me to die to take responsibility for your grandmother's death, I know you only had her...but before you tell me, let me first get rid of Katherine so that my little brother and Elena be at peace afterwards, you can kill me and you have my word that I will not resist.
Damon told her looking into her eyes and she felt he was really serious. He had lived long enough to no longer be afraid of death in general (this can be seen in the way he faces vampires much stronger than him, he is not even afraid of challenging the originals).
"I...I don't know, leave me alone Damon..." She said walking away with mixed emotions. She saw Katherine coming and mistook her for Elena so she came to complain about Damon's "Strange" behavior.
Katherine looked in Damon's direction and saw him chatting with Stefan before leaving from there.
Bonnie touched her and felt the vampiric dark magic inside her body, realizing it wasn't about Elena finding an excuse to leave there, she picked up her phone to call Elena who was still on her way.
At the end of the conversation, she turned around and Katherine was already there.
Katherine: I guess introductions are useless now...
Bonnie tried to inflict a pain spell on her but it only affected Katherine slightly because Bonnie was not strong enough and especially Katherine had a fairly old and strong body.
"Sorry, but I've been on this earth for a long time, so You'll have to do a little more than that , Bonnie." Katherine said before trying to grab Bonnie but she felt a hand grab her by the back of the neck and throw her hard backwards.
"Don't touch our resentful little witch, Katherine..." Damon said to Katherine who stood up quickly as he stood in front of Bonnie to protect her, she wanted to speak when Stefan entered the room.
Katherine: If that isn't a touching reunion. Stefan, Dam-(interrupted)
"Stefan, I'll let you work this out with your ex-girlfriend." Damon said taking Bonnie with him to get her out of there under the captivated gaze of Katherine who was perplexed by Damon's indifferent attitude towards her.

" Did she hurt you?" Damon asked Bonnie who just shook her head.
Damon: Are you sure? I-(interrupted)
Bonnie: I'm ok.
"Okay…I got it" He said raising his hands.
Bonnie: Don't expect me to forget what happened because of you just because you saved me.
Damon: That wasn't my intention. I told you, I don't hope you forgive me. I may have opened my eyes now but I am still a monster and it is too late to hope for forgiveness for everything I have already done.
" You know what ? I don't want to know anything but…thanks for earlier." Bonnie said as she left completely confused in her emotions.
Everything happened as in canon, Katherine tried to seduce Stefan and remind him of their past romantic moments to confirm to him that he loved her on his own and not through hypnosis but Stefan pushed her away.
Damon went to the hospital for his second appointment of the week with Harper, his psychiatrist, but when he returned to the mansion, he found Katherine sitting nonchalantly in one of the chairs.
Damon: I think it's very reckless for you to come back here.
Katherine: I just came to say goodbye. Is this bad ?
Damon: I have searched for you for over 145 years and you have never shown your presence, Katherine. Your goodbye is neither necessary nor desired but I would still like to thank you for something.
Katherine: Thank me?
Damon: If I came back to life instead of being a common skeleton in a box today it's because I had your blood in my veins. So thank you, that's why I'm not aggressive towards you now but I advise you to leave and give up your plans here because if by chance you come back here to bother Stefan then I'm going to rip out your tiny bitch heart without any hesitation .
He turned around to go to his room but Katherine was already in front of him.
"You can threaten me and show me that you hate me but now you have the choice between kissing me or killing me, but Damon, we both know that you are only capable of one thing. Isn't that right, Dam-(interrupted)" Katherine tried to seduce him but in one quick movement, Damon shoved a pencil into Katherine's abdomen before breaking the tip of the pencil and pushing Katherine aside.
"There's something you need to understand about me now, I no longer have any sort of obsessive love for the bitch you are and I don't even have the slightest trace of hatred either. I don't feel anything towards you Katherine, you don't represent anything at all anymore..." He said in the greatest calm before going up the stairs to go to his room under Katherine's shocked gaze.
He could kill her now and avoid future complications but it was Katherine, killing her like that after all was too hasty for him. Damon wanted her to experience what rejection was like And unfortunately, it will have repercussions.
The next evening, Harper was processing paperwork in his office and reviewing a patient's case.
It was very late and he had promised Lexi to come home early but he hadn't come home yet, the work of a doctor fascinated him because although his nature pushed him to kill, he found it miraculous to be able to preserve lives.
Having not seen her lover for almost two days, Lexi made the trip herself to come see him and take the opportunity to see Caroline who Harper was taking care of, she had already met this friend of Elena's on several occasions.
However, while she was moving silently around the premises because it was no longer visiting time, she arrived near Caroline's room to see someone trying to suffocate her with a pillow it was Elena.
"Elena Stop..." Lexi rushed and pulled Elena backwards to throw her out of the room but at superhuman speed and the pulling force was such that without knowing it, one of Katherine's nails was injured Caroline's face in the area of the left eye, the one that Lexi took for Elena got up at a superhuman speed and Lexi understood that she was dealing with a vampire.
Lexi: You, you're not Elena. Katherine, I presume ?
Katherine: And you're the annoying blonde who's on Stefan's back and thinks she's his big sister, Lexi if I'm not mistaken. (Tilts his head to look at Caroline) Looks like I missed my shot for tonight but I think your corpse will be a much better message for them.
She tried to rush at Lexi and grab her neck but Lexi had a body almost 900 years old now, she was faster and much stronger than Katherine whose hand she grabbed before breaking it and giving her a front kick that sent her shattering the window behind her but before she could even react, Lexi already had her foot planted on Katherine's throat.
"I don't know how you can be stronger than me, it's a surprise but between killing me or saving Caroline you're going to have to decide blondie..." She said before taking a piece of glass from the ground to throw it towards from Caroline's throat.
Before the contact, Lexi had already grabbed the shard of glass but when she looked at where Katherine was, she had already left.
Lexi checked on Caroline screaming in pain as she grabbed her face because of his facial injury. Lexi forced him to drink some of her blood to heal and compelled her to forget everything before going after Katherine as the staff alerted by the noises rushed there .
