Chapter 5: Chapter 5: New Horizons
Start... Volume 2: Heroic Beginnings
A few weeks after the Entrance Exam.
In the wake of the climactic events that unfolded in the entrance, the hallowed halls of U.A. High School braced for a new academic year, a fresh canvas on which the destinies of budding heroes would be painted.
Amidst the students walking to UA, Izuku Midoriya stepped onto the threshold of this prestigious institution—a boy with a will and determination to be the next Symbol of Peace, the same boy that inherited the quirk of the current Symbol of Peace, All Might.
As he continued walking down the halls, he felt the anticipation lingering in the air, a palpable energy that danced between the students he passed by. Nervous laughter mingled with the excited hum of conversation, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie that transcended the boundaries of class and experience.
As he continued walking, the iconic features of U.A. unveiled themselves in the daylight—the gigantic rooms, a testament to the aspirations that soared within its walls; the cutting-edge training grounds that could be seen outside of the windows, where raw potential would be honed into formidable prowess; and the bustling common areas, where friendships would be forged in the crucible of shared ambitions.
Within the vibrant tapestry of the courtyard, initial interactions unfolded like the opening chapters of a captivating novel. Classmates embraced, familiar faces reunited, and newcomers exchanged tentative glances, the unspoken promise of shared adventures lingering in the air. Izuku, a silent observer in this scene, slowly navigated the sea of personalities, making his way to his classroom while a million thoughts ran through his head.
After finally reaching his room, he looked at the gigantic door with excited and nervous eyes while his heartbeat sped up.
"This is it... I'm about to meet the most promising students in the country..." The green-haired boy muttered while staring at the door before finally putting his hands on the door and sliding it. What greeted him, however, was not what he had expected.
"Take your feet off that desk." He saw a dark-blue-haired boy speaking, the same boy who called him out before the written test.
"Huh," Katsuki Bakugao, a blonde-haired boy with his feet on the desk said with a grin while looking at the dark-haired boy.
"It's just the first day and you're disrespecting the school!" The dark-haired boy said.
"You're kidding me, right? Did your old school put a stick up your a*s or were you born with it?" Katsuki said with a grin catching the dark-blue-haired boy off guard. surprising him and leaving him speechless for some moment.
"Let's start over then... I'm Tenya Iida from Soumei Private School-" Tenya said before getting interrupted.
"Soumei huh... So you think you're better than me? I bet I'll enjoy ripping you apart..." Katsuki said, interrupting Tenya before somewhat threatening him.
"Yo-You... Are you threatening me with physical violence? Are you even in the right place? Heroes ar-" Tenya said, going off again to try and teach the blonde hair something before being interrupted once again.
"Can both of you just shut up?" A white-haired boy, Kazuki, going out of an orange portal that just appeared said in a bored voice with his usual calm face before the portal disappeared.
This entrance took everyone in the class by surprise as everyone suddenly put their attention on the white-haired boy. Kazuki however, ignored it and took a seat, causing everyone to shift their attention to the green-haired boy and a brunette girl that just entered.
The brunette girl glanced at the white-haired boy before looking at the green-haired boy beside him.
"I knew you that green hair was familiar... I'm Ochako Uraraka by the way. Thanks for saving me in the entrance exam!" Ochako said as she introduced himself and thanked the green-haired boy causing Izuku to turn red.
Seeing this, the class minded their own business before the dark-haired boy walked to Kazuki's seat.
"Good morning, I'm Tenya Iida from Soumei Private School. You realized that there was another part of the practical exam, didn't you? I admit that you are a superior student." Tenya said, introducing himself as Kazuki looked at him with some confusion.
"I'm Kazuki Tanaka. Nice to meet you." Kazuki just answered, completely ignoring some of the boy's words.
Seeing this, the dark-blue-haired boy just walked away and went to talk to the Izuku and Ochako.
'Blink-Blanket should be just seconds away now' Kazuki thought while Tenya, Izuku and Ochako talked near the door. 'I wonder... Would he ex-' As Kazuki was about to think about something, he saw Katsuki Bakugao approaching him with burning eyes.
"How the hell did you get 132 battle points!" The blonde boy said in a loud irritated boy, almost shouting the words.
"It's for me to know and you to find out..." Kazuki just said which further irritated the blonde boy.
"EXPLAIN!" He shouted with miniature explosions starting to release on his palms.
"I said it's for me to know and for you to find out Rocket Rage." Kazuki said, repeating his words and giving the angry boy a nickname.
"What did you call me..." The boy said as he looked at Kazuki with fury.
"Rocket Rage... It seems you not only have someone with Anger issues but also hearing issues." Kazuki answered back with a smile starting to form on his calm face, further angering Katsuki as the explosion started to grow in his hands.
"You're dead!" The blond boy shouted as he prepared to release the explosions on his palm. However, before he could, he suddenly felt the explosions vanish and a scarf wrapped around him.
"That's enough... You're not here to make friends, nor enemies..." A man with glowing red eyes said while pulling his scarf the wrapped Katsuki Bakugao, separating him from the white-haired boy. "I'm Shota Aizawa, your teacher. Grab these uniforms and meet me outside." Shota Aizawa introduced himself before walking outside.
A few minutes later, on U.A. grounds.
'Quirk Apprehension test?' Everyone thought, looking at their teacher with some confusion.
"What about the ceremony?!" Ochako Uraraka asked, looking at her teacher some expectations.
"We don't have time to waste... You all know about U.A.'s freedom on the campus. That applies to us teachers too." Their teacher explained while glancing at his students and continuing to talk. "Today, everyone on you will undergo 8 different trials. These are activities you've performed in your middle school, except... you're allowed to use your quirk."
After saying so, Shota Aizawa allowed his words to sink in before starting. "Tanaka, you're the top scorer in the entrance exam, even breaking Endeavor's record... Now pitch this ball as far as you can. You are allowed to use your quirk however you want as long as you don't leave the circle." Their teacher said while tossing a ball to the white-haired boy.
'Hmm...' Kazuki thought to himself while catching the ball and walking to the indicated circle. He looked at the ball before looking at his teacher.
"Do you have spare balls?" He asked while looking at his teacher who just nodded. Seeing the response, a smirk appeared on his face as he put the ball in his pocket before he started to do circular gestures with his 2 hands causing some sparks of orange to appear out of thin air.
When his classmates so this, they looked at him with confusion clearly seen from their eyes. However, unlike most of them, a small number of them stared at Kazuki seriously. Unlike most of them, they had a clue on what the white-haired boy planned to do...
'Is he creating a portal?' Some of them thought. Unsurprisingly, their guesses were correct as the sparks expanded and formed a circle portal with a view of the moon. A portal that leads to space which surprised most of the students.
After forming the portal, Kazuki ignored the surprised expressions on his classmates' faces and pulled out the ball before throwing it into the portal. As left Kazuki's hand, it quickly entered the portal to which it got transported to space, specifically, the moon.
After entering the portal and landing on the surface of the moon, the portal dissipated as Kazuki turned his body to look at his teacher with a smirk. "How's that Blink-Blanket?" He asked causing some faces to twitch.
"Don't call me that..." Shota Aizawa said in a serious voice before showing everyone the screen of his phone that says the results. "384,400 km... Good work." He announced the result without a change in expression on his face, unlike the reaction of every student.
"That was so manly!"
"We get to use our quirks!"
"This is what I've expected from the hero course!"
Chatter enveloped the area as some students released their thoughts and praised Kazuki after his wonderful performance. However, not everyone seemed to be the same as 2 people stared at the white-haired boy, one giving a look of anger, while the other gave a look of interest.
"AWESOME! That was incredible Tanaka-san! This is gonna be fun!" The pink-skinned girl, Mina Ashido said cheerfully. However, as her words left her mouth and entered their teacher's ear, things took a turn.
"Fun huh... So you plan to spend your 3 years here to have fun? Alright then, I'll add a new rule. The student who ranked last overall will be deemed 'Hopeless' and expelled." Their teacher said, causing most of their smiles to vanish while the latter, Katsuki, and Kazuki's smiles grew.
'The last one... will be expelled?!' Everyone thought as their happy faces vanished, quickly replaced with despair.
'And here it is...' Kazuki thought while looking at the expression on his classmates.
"This is unfair! It's only our first day!" Ochako who seemed to be confident tried to complain, hoping that her teacher would reconsider.
"Natural disasters, revenge-driven villains, and many more calamities. The world is filled with this unfairness and heroes must face this unfairness. So if you're just gonna go around saying this is unfair, just pack your bags and leave now. Don't go and waste my time further." Shota Aizawa said as he glanced at his students, teaching them a lesson in life before continuing to speak. "Now then, what Tanaka did is just a demonstration. I expect everyone to overcome this challenge and climb to the top. Let's continue."
As everyone heard their teacher's voice, motivation suddenly filled their minds. They were now as determined as they can ever be. After all, who would want their dreams to end just because they rank last?
Trial 1: 50-meter dash
While 2 students at a time ran, most of them just stood on the sidelines watching their peers and hoping for the best. Kazuki, however, with Tenya was selected as the first 2 students to do the dash.
As the 2 students got in their positions, the dark-blue-haired boy wished his classmate luck right before he ran as fast as he could with boosters from his calf. On the other hand, Kazuku quickly made his iconic circular gestures with his hands as sparks came out of thin air and then turned into a portal leading to the finish line that he quickly entered.
"Tenya Iida, 3.04 seconds. Kazuki Tanaka, 3.43 seconds." Their teacher announced before the next set of students stood in the starting line.
In a flash, Everyone took their turn in the first trial and they moved on the the second, third, fourth and so on until they finished all of it. These trials went by with Kazuki mostly relying on his physical strength for the grip test, seated toe-touch, sit-ups and sustained sideways jump while using portals once again for the Long jump, distance run and the Pitch Ball.
And now after all of that, there at the end where the results will be announced. Some of them were looking at their teachers in anticipation, some were sitting on the ground because of exhaustion, and others, or should I say Kazuki Tanaka just didn't care.
"Well, everyone did a good job... Here's the result." Their teacher said before he pressed a button on his phone that showed a holographic picture of the results.
Results:
Momo Yaoyorozu : 1st
Shoto Todoroki :2nd
Katsuki Bakugo :3rd
Tenya Ida : 4th
Fumikage Tokoyami : 5th
Mezo Shoji : 6th
Kazuki Tanaka : 7th
...
Izuku Midoriya : 21th
As the results were revealed, students released their breath as they sighed in relief. However, one of them looked at the results with teary eyes.
"No... it can't end here..." Izuku Midoriya, the one in 21st place muttered silently with tears starting to form in his eyes.
Most of his peers looked at him with pity, especially Ochako Uraraka. Some of them didn't care, like Kazuki Tanaka and a boy who had red and white hair. And of course, one of them was full of joy knowing that Izuku Midoriya would be expelled.
However, contrary to everyone's expectations, that didn't seem to be the case as their teacher spoke once again. "Oh, the expulsion part was a lie."
"WHAT!" Most of them shouted as the words entered their ear.
"It was a logical ruse to pull out your best performance..." Their teacher explained with a smile on his face, entertained by his class' reaction.
'Huh... He actually did that' Kazuki thought, his face full of confusion, wondering why Shota Aizawa didn't expel the green-haired boy.
"Come on guys, use your brains. Of course, it was just a ruse." A girl said getting everyone's attention.
"You knew?!" Some students remarked as they stared at the girl.
"Of cou-" The girl was about to answer however, as she saw everyone, including a certain white-haired boy glance at her, she suddenly froze before recovering and finishing her words.
'She still remembers me?' Kazuki thought, noticing the sudden change in the girl before he turned around and walked to the building to change.
