Chapter 41: Xoxox Just Kidding Ch 38

Entering the slightly grimy holding room, Wanda found several metal barriers lying scattered on the floor.

She stepped forward and peered through the bars, seeing a group of frightened children huddled together below.

Some wore mismatched pajamas, while others were dressed in nothing more than rags. Their timid expressions and wide eyes mirrored Wanda, Pietro, and Sergey's own experiences from three years ago.

Weren't they once the same? Filled with despair, numbness, and daily anxiety, waiting for the ever-present threat of death?

Pity and regret welled up within Wanda. Ignoring the filth, she knelt by the partition and looked through the gaps to meet the children's gazes. Her voice softened as she spoke,

"Hey, little ones, how are you holding up?"

"Hello, miss. Are you here to save us?"

A little girl, emboldened by Wanda's gentle tone and beautiful face, mustered the courage to ask timidly.

"Yes, little ones. I'm here to take you to safety. Can you all move to the corner for a moment?"

The children responded well, holding hands as they shuffled back together, forming a huddle in the corner, each holding onto their neighbors for comfort. It was a poignant scene, almost endearing in its innocence.

Wanda smiled. Rising from the ground, she channeled her chaotic magic energy to tear away the metal barrier. With a single pull, she tossed it aside, reassuring the children not to be afraid.

Red energy then floated upwards, guided by Wanda's control, bathing the children in a reassuring glow. Standing before them, she squatted down, scrutinizing each little face. Pale and frightened, yet flickering with excitement, they seemed a little better already.

Suddenly, Natasha's voice crackled through the headset, "Wanda, I see you."

Wanda glanced towards the corner camera and nodded. "Are there any other children in custody?"

A brief pause followed from Natasha's end before she continued, "No, that's all of them."

Wanda fell silent, the weight of unspoken words hanging heavy in the air. She understood the implication – some children who should have been alive were gone.

Beside her, Pietro and Sergey remained silent, anger simmering in their eyes. Wanda gritted her teeth, forcing out a single sentence, "Those damn bastards."

"Indeed. Most of that trash has already met their maker," responded Natasha.

Noticing the children's growing fear and confusion, Wanda recomposed herself. Looking directly at the little girl in front of her, she spoke calmly, "I'm going to take you all out of here, alright?"

"Okay!"

The little girl nodded eagerly.

Wanda smiled and offered a hug to the little girl, holding a little boy's hand with her free one. The other children faces breaking into genuine smiles, followed their lead towards the door. Sergey and Pietro flanked the group, forming a protective barrier.

On the way out, a group of boys walked hand-in-hand, looking up at Sergey and Pietro with wide eyes filled with excitement and admiration. These were the great heroes who saved them. Sergey, in particular, with his imposing 1.8-meter stature and double swords, captivated the young boys. He was everything cool in their eyes.

Sensing their admiration, Sergey offered a sunny smile, a contagious expression that quickly eased the remaining tension among the children.

Through the headsets, Natasha relayed instructions from the main control room as they made their way.

It didn't take long before the entire base was cleared. Everyone regrouped in an open space. At Natasha's signal, the surrounding bodies silently vanished into an invisible pocket dimension, sparing the children any unnecessary psychological trauma from the sight of death.

Ronin observed Wanda, noting her calm and responsible demeanor with the children. The curious yet quiet children offered respectful nods, occasionally glancing towards Gennady, Sumarokov, and the others.

Those three carried large metal containers filled with cooled Adamantium liquid metal, which would later be solidified into its final form.

Adamantium, one of the world's hardest metals, wasn't suitable for making weapons. Natasha then emerged from a hidden passage and approached Ronin, handing him two U-disks with a knowing gesture.

"Both the good and the bad data are here. I've also deleted the rest."

"Excellent work," acknowledged Ronin with satisfaction.

Everything had gone according to plan. He had even casually eliminated Stryker's son – a spoiled brat better off dead. Professor X could wait; a casual knockout seemed the better option compared to testing his Overlord Color Haki's resistance against psychic powers.

The mission had been a success, and they had secured everything they had come for.

"Brother...
