Chapter 88: Reasons

The guilt intensified with my question, but hidden deep down I could also feel self hatred, doubts, countless doubts, as if he didn't know why he did.

I waited for a long time before he came up with an answer. And it was disappointing.

"It doesn't matter anymore, he's dead"

"That's not an answer"

He didn't answered me, so I added, "I think it's only fair I discover the reason you killed him, since I'll also suffer the consequences from now on"

He then glanced at me, now staring me in the eye, he said, "You'll discover eventually. But…"

Another wave of emotions coming from him washed me over. Fear, reluctance, and anxiety.

Then he continued, "There is a reason…but I can't reveal it to you"

I never saw him so weak, even if we just saw each other two times, I felt like I know him better than anyone else, in his life and my own.

Then all of a sudden, I felt the world around me spin, and I knew what that meant: my time here was coming to an end. I felt my vision growing blurry.

Realizing I was running out of time, Iske said, "Continue to see my memories, you need to. All the answers are in my memories—Agares, 'Julian, everything"

As he spoke, my world grew darker and darker.

"And remember this," he continued, "No matter what happens, or how you feel. When you discover the truth, remember this"

Before I completely collapsed, he finished with reassurance:

"It was not your fault"

Then, the darkness came. But it was only for a moment, right in the next second, I woke up once again. Opening my eyes I found myself in the same place I previously was, in the middle of a destroyed city.

I got up from the ground as I remembered his words.

"It was not your fault…"

What does that mean? Why does my chest feel heavy hearing that?

It was not your fault.

Why did everything about Iske have to be so complex? Every piece of information I had about him was either wrong or incomplete. And now, the only thing I thought I actually knew about him—the fact that he killed Julian—is perhaps wrong.

But that doesn't make sense, let's think logically, he killed Julian Rose. That's a fact, it was televised, him killing Julian, millions of people saw, it can't be wrong, it's impossible to hyponite so many people.

Even if there is a way to hypnotize millions of mundane people, there are still ascenders involved, it's simply impossible.

So I can only think of a single theory. He was forced to kill Julian by someone, his phrase would make sense then.

But what would anyone gain from killing Julian? What would anyone gain by making Iske kill Julian, if they wanted to kill Julian, why involve someone like Iske?

What if they were after both? If they wanted to kill Julian and Iske? Julian was rather famous, he was considered one of the next heroes, but Iske was not, Iske was from the great families, and they don't involve themselves with mundane people, so Iske was not famous at all before the tournament.

I'm missing something, who would want this? It doesn't make sense, because Iske killing Julian didn't generate anything at all. There was no conflict, no political move, nothing.

I can't see the benefit of making Iske kill Julian, not a single one in countless angles, not for any criminal in the world hiding in Fabrica, not for the demons, there was no reason.

Perhaps it is much more simple, someone had a grudge against Julian and used Iske to kill him. But I assume that Julian couldn't have angered someone capable of forcing Iske to do anything.

And if he did, why the need of using Iske at all, he could have used anyone else, why risk getting on the bad side of the Grace family?

Perhaps this 'Person' knew that the Grace family wouldn't help Iske…

That leads me to another unanswered question: How did Iske survive his judgment? The punishment for an Ascender who commits murder is only one—death.

How did Iske avoid the death penalty without the support of his family and under the pressure of the Rose family?

Then he was released from prison, and only lost access to his mana core. And they didn't even use a permanent method against his mana core; they simply used a curse that could be lifted very easily, so much so that I did it.

I'm missing something, a crucial part of it all. What can it be?

Why couldn't he have just told me? He said he couldn't reveal me, but why? Is something preventing it? If so, then what is it? What could be preventing him from telling me? And for what purpose.

Sighs.

I'm getting a headache, there is too much I still don't know, I need to see more of his memories to finish this puzzle. There are too many questions for me to solve. For now, it's better I focus on finishing this exam.

Thinking that I began to move and walked back to where the Ground folk currently are. Arriving there I noticed that it was very noisy, and that the guards were not on patrol, there was no one protecting the place.

Entering the building I saw many people arguing against each other, in fact it was not random people discussing, it was the Ground folk arguing against the ascenders.I saw Ian, trying to appease the situation together with other ascenders.

Approaching him, I asked, "What's happening?"

He looked at me surprised and angry, "Where were you?"

"I went on a walk," I lied.

"They discovered that the Ground city has been destroyed, and now they are mad"

I passed my eyes through the building, and didn't find her, so I asked, "Where's Eliza?"

"She hasn't woken yet"

Well, that's really a problem, but not my problem.

"Just let them yell, and wait Eliza wake up"

I saw that Ian was about to say something, but someone shouting brought our attention, we glanced to our side and saw a group of the Ground folk trying to leave the building while some students were blocking them.

It was a large group, and the two ascenders couldn't contain them without hurting the people.

It's not my problem…

Sighs, "I'm an idiot" I said and began to walk towards them.
