My theory: Multiple personality disorder due to awakening two sets of past life memories. It just took this long for your memories to stabilize enough for you to reintegrate into one new, but different and slightly confused person.

Looks like the high risk/high reward type system that you need to start with the lowest option on to survive until you get enough power to start working your way up the mission difficulty spikes.
