Looks like both parents were horrible people. And I use the term "people" loosely, they were monsters.

It was probably his shaving blade. He was considered nonviolent and they seem to want the patients live as normal a life as possible. In the days before electric shavers, that meant one with a blade, either a two sided that was removable from the handle or a folding straight blade.
