Many creatures are "smarter" than humans, such as Orca, Porpoise/Dolphins, etc. But they have no tech, only sonic communication, and that changes from generation to generation, family to family. So though they can learn things and teach it to others, they will forget those things with lack of practice. Humans can retain most things by recording it down - as long as it is not destroyed. They are the only known beast able to do this. Dolphin communication though can be more...direct.
