He was born in a poor family in Ji Ting Town, Yixing City, Jiangsu Province. His father was a folk painter. Xu Beihong had studied poetry, calligraphy, and painting under his father's guidance since he was a child, and he had shown amazing talent. His talent in painting developed and he became one of the founders of modern Chinese art. Xu Beihong advocated the improvement of traditional Chinese painting and proposed the reform theory of modern Chinese painting.
