If the "murdered" lord doesn't lose his land after being killed, wouldn't it make more sense to capture and imprison the lords instead? This would probably greatly hinder the progression of his land considering how the figurehead's gone missing.

Sending the sword-and-shield soldiers back to rescue the archers meant he failed to decisively cripple the 1st or 2nd.
And he sent *slow* troops back to stop a massacre by fast cavalry. Of *course* the archers would all be dead before the sword-and-shield soldiers arrived...
But in his head, everything was still fine at that point...
