man it s not septicemia it's the scorbut you are talking about >_< septicemia is blood infection by bacterie (usualy cause of a wound) what plagued sailor was scorbut wich is cause by some vitamin carence that they couldn t have cause no freash fruit while traveling for long on the ocean.
