I think the label of "evil spirit" is a bit much for a hollow. Corrupt? Lost? Empty? They seem more fitting honestly, a hollow is a being consumed by their own emotions, eventually lose their mind and can only sate themselves by feeding...etc.

I have read this book a couple of times, and each time I read this chapter I end getting angry because WHO THE F**K WOULD STAY STILL AND NOT RUN FROM A SHARK. I might seem a bit emotional about it but couldn't you focus on the Empress part of her name for that part, for example it would make more sense as to why she doesn't allow them to leave or why it could be considered disrespectful to turn their backs on her, plus movies involving sharks almost all involve a scene of helpless prey running/swimming from a shark, therefore it seems more like common sense to run when face to face with one.
