I'M sorry but why did he not give the apprentice the book normally there's no need for him to meet the Sage.

But the riddle needs the fishermen to give it context, it can't be told without that to limit its answers.

The first riddle is ridiculous, its out of context and can only be answered with knowledge of the real world, why the hell would a NPC, sage or not, know real world Knowledge?
