The rest of the conversation was uneventful, merely just bickering between my family and the friends I consider family. Things I did not want to hear. We have a real threat and all we can do is fight with eachother. What has this community turned into? And our leaders? We can't do anything productive if we have twenty three people fighting with one another.
"Can we even trust Carla to be turned into one of those? She's unstoppable as is with just being a superhuman, but if she can get ahold of those monster's powers too? She'll really be unstoppable." Axel explained.
"You're worrying a lot about your own skin," Madelyn growled.
"Why can't we be friends, why can't we be friends-" Hannah starting singing softly while rocking back and forth with her hands covering her ears.
"I think you need to throw the knife again," Sage whispered to me.
Everyone started arguing with one another. A stress I refused to acknowledge so I simply walked from the room. I walked from the building.
This time I wasn't running off. That wasn't me anymore. I was building walls. Tall walls; border walls. Every step I took made another section. I watched the walls erect from the far tree lines slowly, quickening with my pace. I had finished my work bu the time I reached the cabin, where I sat down on the steps and looked out over the town. The town of normal and super humans alike. The one place in the entire world where they can live harmoniously together. No fears of the other attacking. We had created a peaceful atmosphere for everyone to live in, and yet, a species sought to destroy it.
I shook my head and looked to the ground as my head flooded with thoughts. In the past two years, our civilization has changed a lot. A lot more than most. We had farms, we had stores, homes, clothing stores, etc. We had created a paradise, and yet still someone wanted to kill us. Two years of peace have been destroyed. And now we faced a real threat, the one thing created to kill us. And all we can do to combat it is fight eachother.
I could see a swirl of different colors erupting from behind the window curtains of the conference room. I rolled my eyes and walked into the house, making sure to gently shut the door.
Joey was cleaning the kitchen when I walked in. I gave him a gentle smile and grabbed the broom to help.
He stopped and looked at me, a worriedness spread across his face like a wildfire.
"What's gotten you so scared Carla?" Joey asked, "I can see it in your eyes."
"Cut the crap Joey, you could smell it," I growled as I set the broom down.
"Why so hostile?" Joey asked gently as he put the sponge and soap away.
"Your kind is trying to murder my family," I sighed gently as I leant up against the wall, making sure not to knock a picture frame down.
"Well," Joey sighed once more, "You are my family, and I intend to protect you with my life, no matter my species."
"You say that only because you see me as Alpha," I pouted.
He walked over and set his hand on my shoulder, gently smiling at me, "And I see you as Alpha because I see you fit to lead."
"You know how it works around here," I said as Joey walked back to the sink to start cleaning dishes.
"Oh yes, I do see. You and Carter are alphas, as chosen by everyone else but not publicly spoken. Madelyn, Liam, Kathy, Rachel, and Nathan being your deltas: second in command. Anything you two say goes however what they say is questioned first."
"You should see the things they're saying about me in there," I sighed, "It's awful."
"I can hear it," Joey answered, "Makes me want to rip their voice boxes out."
I glared at him.
"But we work peacefully here," Joey added without looking up from the dishes.
"Alphas aren't questioned, therefore I'm not an alpha."
"Alpha's are respected, you just have a bad egg in there spreading darkness."
"Little scapegoat huh," I sighed.
"Rachel told everyone, I know."
"They're gonna kill you if they find out you're a Cachion," I explained.
"I know Carla," Joey responded, "But I'm not Cachion, I'm Lieon, and Lieonsville Pack isn't falling."
"This is starting to sound an awful lot like werewolf talk," I snapped lightly.
"Only the Alpha system is shared, nothing else."
"More like a dictatorship," I sighed.
"Dictatorship if you are thinking about the Cachion community. Run by one person who kills all who are out of line-"
"Friendship is you are thinking about Lionsville."
Joey made two glasses of water and handed me one. He held his glass out in the way you'd make a toast.
And with the sound of our glasses clinking together, Joey smiled and said, "Down with Mekleh."
"Down with the king," I recited before taking a drink of my water.
