Chapter Four: Bad News
"Nikki? What are you doing here?"
"Hello, Aunt Maria. I was on a vacation leave now. How was Mama this afternoon?" she asked the woman in her 60s.
Maria and her family are very close friends. They were neighbors ever since she was born and so; they were like a family. She's very grateful for how the woman helping her to watch her mother while she's working during the day and refusing to receive a payment in return.
"She had a seizure two hours ago. But do not worry, she's just resting now."
Her heart squeezes with pain hearing this. She sighed. Her mother needed to schedule her surgery as soon as possible.
"By the way, Doctor Ben left a message if you could see him in his office once you off from work."
"Oh, okay. Thank you, Aunt Maria. You can go home then once I came back."
Nikki headed to the 10th-floor where Doctor Ben's clinic located. She knocks on the door and his Secretary let her come in.
"Hi, Tracy. Doctor Ben wants to talk with me?"
"Ah, yes. But he has a patient at the moment. Please, kindly wait. They were just in a while ago, so it will take a little longer."
"Oh, no problem! I was just too early."
Tracy nodded at her then go back on recording some information to the logbook. She quietly seated in the lounge and did not disturb the secretary anymore. Nikki patiently waited while secretly observes the whole clinic.
How does it feel like while working with a handsome boss? Doctor Ben still single all these years. As what she heard, he is in the mid-30s now.
He was a famous professor in Mainland University, and all the female students had a crush on him. But she never heard he was in a relationship.
Damn it! Why she's caring about this stuff? She is not one of those women dying to sleep a handsome man like Doctor Ben Ryan. She has no interest in joining the long line of women fantasizing about the doctor or any men she knows around.
She had nothing else to think about but only her mother's medical condition and the hospital bills. This is too much to care about rather than looking for a boyfriend.
Nikki distracted herself on swiping her phone, reading some articles regarding her mother's condition, and what she could better do during the times her mother having a seizure, and they were alone.
A half-hour passed and Doctor Ben's office door open. Nikki heard screeching on the floor when Tracy instantly get up from her chair once the door open.
"Goodbye, Mr. Shang." She bid and bows.
Nikki notices a frantic tone from Tracy's voice. Her left brow pushes upward, and curiosity bites her. She keeps her head down staring at her phone, thus only a wheelchair she got to see passing her then a huge black leather shoe from the man following whoever ride that running chair.
She was about to lift her head when Doctor Ben calls out her name, and her attention shifted to him; forgotten to check out whose Mr. Shang that is...
"Nikki! Glad you were here already. Have you wait that long?"
She stood from the sofa and stride closer toward Doctor Ben. He invited her inside, and she follows him.
"Nah. I have just arrived too early from work," she laughs softly. Blushing, she can't look him straight in the eyes.
She didn't have to stare at him to determine how handsome his smile plastering on his face; she's not yet immune up to now but gives a slight shake to her knees.
What was that mean? Her heart flutters.
"You got early off from work?" he asked Nikki after she settled to a chair beside his table prepared for his patient.
"Yes. Boss allows me," she smiles shyly.
"Michelle considering Aunt Lucy's needs."
"She was really a great boss. She offers me a vacation leave with salary, I can't refuse."
"Sounds great!" Doctor Ben nodding head.
"I hope you did not encourage her to do so? I mean, you mentioned to her about Mama's condition."
"Ah, she was asking about Aunt Lucy, and so, I mentioned to her. I'm sorry if I—"
"Oh, no! I was actually grateful. You were helping us more than you should do."
Doctor Ben showed a warm smile, but then his eyes turned apologetic. "However, what I am about to tell you is bad news."
She breathes. She may already prepare herself for any bad news she could hear, but still, it is depressing to hear out them. "Okay, I'm all ears," she retorted. It was more sounded a cheer to herself.
"Your mother had a seizure once again. We need to perform the surgery sooner. We found people with RH negative," Doctor Ben began stating. "Bad news is, one is too old already and the other one is ill. We cannot get some blood from these people."
What unpleasant news. Nikki sighed sadly.
"Don't lose hope, okay? I will inform you once another reports arrive."
She forced a smile, nodding at Doctor Ben. "Thank you so much, Doctor Ben. I also keep looking. I will ask my relatives might they will find someone too."
"Yes. We won't stop, we can do this!" Doctor Ben's encouragement to Nikki.
Doctor Ben Ryan truly a remarkable person not only because of his profession but also his personality. He never abandons all of his patients. Talks circulating around how he would help all them from the very beginning until the last fight of their lives. That is why she stays positive and hopeful.
Despite the bad news, Nikki left the clinic with hope. It won't help her mother if she shows any weakness. There is no room to worry or be sad every time, but she must even try harder to find that person.
