Actually irrigation, fertilizer and plows are much more important in both short and long term than four cycle rotation... In many places rotations weren't even used around the world even in modern agriculture. Monoculture was pretty efficient and lucrative, as long as you got enough fertilizer the sky is the limit. One of the biggest issues was actually manpower to both planting and harvesting the crops, land was under developed because it was so hard to do all the manual labor with their current means (no tractors or harvesters), it was almost the biggest bottleneck when it comes to productivity.
