I see prophits both ways...as there are things besides field crops that he would still need to bring from the past. People would be able to sustain themselves by the plants, but other foods like meat he would still need to bring. Even more so, in the future if the colony is self sufficient when it comes to food...he could then focus in bringing other materials rather than food.
