This is a good read. I finished it a few years ago, and now it evokes nostalgia. The author is especially adept at character building.

Finally I caught up! I originally read this novel a couple months back elsewhere but i couldn’t remember where. Now that i’ve finshed reading this, I must say, some parts felt boring and the translation was subpar at times, but it was a nice read.

I'm rereading this now and on around chapter 740, I originally read this some 5-3 years ago till around chap 900, though I've forgotten most of it. I like this story, especially the start and it has managed to retain my intrest but there are quite a few issues with it. Mainly: Very few and I mean very few characters aren't one dimensional and even then the other aspects of them are rather dull, so you will be noticing that enemies are almost always very evil, like very very evil, and the good guys are almost always saints like you've never seen before or they are neutral bland and have no personality. Enemy motivations are usually "I wanna do evil thing because maybe it has some benefits, dunno" or "I want that thing, thus I will consume children to get it", which does get boring. Then there is the mc, at the start hes likable and I enjoyed reading about him and his training with the spear, but from like chapters 200? or 400 onward it's nolonger about the mc struggling or pursuing his spear techniques to perfection which contradicts with what he himself expressed as his reason for cultivation (after saving his parents), not for the strength for the sake of it, rather to perfect his spear technique. Sadly the spear just becomes his best wepon, and even thennits not that he integrates the new techniques into his spear play, he just uses the spear to apply them, as far as we know his spear techniques are still the same as they were when he was a legend ranker. Also he's like annoyingly talented, every other chapter we as readers are told how incredibly talented he is. The reason I like this story is that the mc is bearable and sometimes likable, the fights are ok and the world is intresting, but sadly it doesn't really excell at anything but the spear parts, which we see less and less of as the story goes on, also another positive is that the story does move on, he does do things and move away from places DUE TO HIS OWN WILL rather than being forced by something, well often he does things because he wants to help his family, but usually it's his own will

I’ll be honest, this novel is pretty bad. It’s also pretty fast-paced so don’t expect any world-building or character development from the author. Just don’t expect the author to go in-depth. World Building: Nonexistent Character Development: It’s pretty dull. The side characters and villains are forgettable. The mc wants something, he gets it. He also doesn’t suffer at all. There’s almost no tension, even when the mc got poisoned. The characters just don’t have enough depth to them for anyone reading to care about them. Even when the close ones of the mc died it felt like nothing because not much is known about them except that they were close ones of the mc. Power System: We’re introduced to your generic cultivation power system. There’s not much explained on how to break through the next realm or even details on why that realm is different. The author doesn’t set a clear foundation of the power system and just makes it all up as he writes. The author sometimes randomly introduces new power that was never explained and just says, “oh yeah, I didn’t mention but the mc has this power and this is why he got stronger”. You get what I mean. Plot: Loved one gets taken away or is threatened —> mc must get stronger —> time skip of mc’s training to get stronger —> goes out to test his powers —> strong enough? If not fight battles and become stronger through that —-> gets rid of the threat. Just rinse and repeat this and that’s the plot. Writing Quality: It’s pretty trash. Almost no description of anything. We don’t know what anything looks like. For example, the mc enters a room but the author doesn’t describe how big or small the room is and what’s in the room. You get what I mean. So we just get a dull and pretty meaningless world to look at. It makes reading the novel a chore because it’s not fun to read. There’s not much to imagine when reading the novel. It’s even worse when the mc is battling someone because the author just puts sound effects. For example, the author loves using the sound effect of “hong hong hong” a lot when the mc is using his spear which makes absolutely no sense why the spear would even make that type of sound. It just breaks the immersion because it sounds so silly. And there’s a lot of show, don’t tell. I wouldn’t recommend this novel to any veteran reader but for starters, it would be fine. Barely an edible read, overall rating of 6/10.

After reading Desolate Era, I was excited to read some of IET's other works. Lord Xue Ying started all right, I find it quite similar to DE with the loving family, hardworking MC, love interest but it diverges. Desolate Era was readable and unique in that the MC is focused on raising his power to resurrect his wife. The Dao, powers, character and world building were introduced and built in a much better manner. However this novel feels like a storyboard cartoon: Enemy stronger than MC, MC friend dies, MC trains, MC kills enemy, repeat with some filler characters that aren't mentioned later on. The MC's actions are also unlikeable, he is giving so much for the Xia Clan and not taking an opportunity to get stronger when he is given it. The world also feels unrealistic, like the villains just started plotting when he arrived there as if it was a video game dialogue that loads in. At least make the world run without the MC there. Overall, this novel might be good for a starting reader but it is a clear step down from Desolate Era and I hope the author can make something of similar quality in the future.

I just can’t read this any longer. Idk what is the word for it in english, but do u know when the bad guy start to mess with everyone in the bar and the MC is just too op and the bad guy gets scared and run off?? Well there’s TOO MUCH of that like way too much, even more than fights. In Swallowed star for example, it happens once in every 300 chapters but here? Every 20 chapters! it gets so boring, and from start to finish no one wants to pick a fight with cuz he’s “talented” and they always think (I have to befriend him because he has a bright future) not I have to kill him so he doesn’t become a threat in the future. The author always says that the MC have been struggling, but did he though? No one wants to pick a fight with him because of his talent or his teacher is op and it goes on and on and on. The only thing I like in this novel to give it 3 stars is the unique concept of laws in this novel is better than anything I read so far.

A long but good story with many twists and turns. There are moments that seem repetitive at times but I have yet to find a better long read.

deserves a much higher rating. As with almost all of these works, the first few arcs are the strongest, but that's to be expected by this point

1st novel with a chapter of more than 1k chapters and completed novel that I've ever read from the start to finish. YAY ! ACHIEVEMENT DONE!! 🎉🎉 I read more than 200 novels but I didn't ever mind to finish it because it gets boring all the time. I don't know how I read this all way to the end. On my personal point of view, the why I read this all the way to the end? hmm. I think it's because I read and give time to myself ponder things. Lastly, for the newbie reader or who else read this, PLEASE think better to not get addicted and read all the time because that waste your days of your life. BE PRODUCTIVE, WE CAN BE BETTER THAN THIS CHARACTERS, IN THE WAY WE WANT! - just sharing hehehe. Well I wanted to continue reading, but I will try to lessen the time to read novel hehe. Lord xue ying is one of my favourites. Unlike other iet's novels, xue ying main cultivation path is not offense-based. I'm surprised that he chose mirage instead of his other offense path.

I loved this story - Xue Ying is about the perfect man that can be there in existing ;-) Though still a loner. The universe seems complex and it's not everything smooth for the MC, he has to fight for his success. I don't understand why this story is locked though, you can find it for free on other places.

Anithing I Eat Tomates writes is a masterpiece, I must have read hundreda of xianxia, wuxia, etc book over the years and his works always stand out. I think what I like most about them is the pacing of the story. Most of his books are more calm and the story is about the protagonists jouney than his conflicts.

the novel is good, but the end...not even a day for the end? there is so much stuff missing it would fill over 300 chapters. but the first chapters on his home planet/world a like always supreme. even the way the mc goes in his cultivation, the role of illusion/soul/origin, 5 ropes...i like this novel dearly, but why this end?

Xue ying is a better character written by I eat tomatoes, he ensures that the progression of his character is gradual and yet in level with the pace of his writing. as he leaves the mortal realm he gets ridiculously powerful and the time skip which happens are annoying sometimes but overall good story and excellent writing.

IET does it again, ignores the criticism of the mc in desolate era being broken with no real struggles. This one is even worse, he made a character that makes cultivating look easy just because, everyone else lacks talents.

I Eat Tomatoes is the author who introduced me to the world of Chinese novels with Coiling Dragon, so he holds a special place for me. Lord Xue Ying is his sixth novel that I have read, so how does it measure up to the xianxia genre in general and the other books from the author in particular. The story is interresting, well-paced, with the usual themes we can expect from IET (fight against dark powers and ascension to the top of cultivation). It is written in a fine style, it has a good combination of planed storytelling with wrenches thrown into the gears at the right times in order to renew the plot. A good story, but not the best I've read from this author. Sadly, this novel suffers from a big flaw, especially in the latter third/fourth of the book: filler. Seriously, the author sometimes retells an event or situation from at least two, and often three, four or even in one case five points of view, without adding any value to the story. As a result, some chapters could be a third or even a fourth of their size without losing any value plot-wise. The main character, the eponymous Dong Bo Xue Ying, is a fine protagonist in the IET style dear to my heart. Honest, determinated, caring for his loved ones and friends, he is passionate about cultivation and spear (his favorite weapon for the whole novel), and one of the best MC made by the author, distingued by his interrest and generosity to others). His wife Yu Jing is also a very good character, relevant to many parts of the plot, although her importance diminishes from the half point of the book (but she is still present), just as the one of his family (the protagonist being too "exceptionnal" for them to truly follow in the story). This is quite normal for IET, as romance has almost never been the strong suit of his work (with one or two exceptions). In fact, for the rest of the cast, there is a lot of renewal between the various point of the story, the most in any novel of IET, whether were talking about allies, mentors, friends or antagonists. Truth to be told, there is no real main villain driving the plot of even the last part of the book. The only exception being one of the MC's friend/mentor, who is in fact the easyly recognizable Luo Feng, the protagonist of Swallowed Star (one of IET's previous novel). Most of the characters, out of the main cast, are functionnaly written, but not really fleshed out beside that, especially for most antagonists, who are hostile because "it's their nature" or "their are jealous of the protagonist". The cultivation system is where this book truly shines, as it has in fact multiple cultivations systems, each a road to to the top (some based of blood/lineage power, other based on understanding the Dao "poetically" or "scientifically"...). And while the protagonist has a favorite system, he picks from numerous styles along the road, with great descriptions of his perception, insights and progresses, which make the reading of the "cultivation" parts a real pleasure. Plus, unlike a lot of novels of the genre, the power progression of the MC does not accelerate toward the end of the book, but instead slows down, as Xue Ying is the first to center his cultivation on a certain Dao in this novel's universe (a major plot point). For the translation, the first quarter of the translation has been done very well by Radiant Translation. Sadly after the translator was switched to Chaos, the quality took a dive, with numerous typos, wrong uses of words, changes to the terms designating something from one paragraph to another... The novel is still readable, but this level of work, which I can only qualify as "sloppy", makes the experience quite bumpy, and that's inexcusable for the work of  a writer of IET's caliber. So, in conclusion, Lord Xue Ying is good, even very good novel, with a fine story, an amazing power system, very good protagonist, but also mostly average character writting and lots of filler in the latter part of the story. Moreover the sloppy translation is bad enough to take it down a notch. As far as IET's novels go, it is clearly above Swallowed Star and Seeking the Flying Sword Path, but below the wonderful Coiling Dragon and Desolate Era, on par with Stellar Transformation. My final verdict for Lord Xue Ying is a 7 out of 10 (originally a 8, but I just can't ignore the bad translation). A fine piece of reading, especially for the cultivation, although not the author's best. P.S: thanks to I Eat Tomatoes for writing this novel and Radiant Translation for translating the first part. As for Chaos, please try to improve.

It's a great read so far! (~180 ch in) Xue Ying's character is consistent and side characters are likeable. Not having an insipid harem element also catapults this to the top of my reading list.

I am so confused right now. I read all the chapters and somehow the novel seems to be finished. But the story has not ended though. Why did it end so abrubtly? Like the MC has not even reached the end of the cultivation system.

Start it out pretty good, But after a while I just stopped being interesting to me. The story is kinda started repeating itself. He become powerful and then met somebody that could overpower him, And then he went into seclusion and became overpowered again rinse and repeat.
