Standing, he placed the revolver next to the shotgun and raised his hands high above his head. Just in time. The four men were in the midst of deployment, all but Halley with lethal looking weapons. David stepped clear of the car, keeping his hands well up. They stopped. In tableau they eyed each other off.
'Whatever it is he's told you,' David called, 'it's a lie. He killed Nick.'
Halley said something quietly into the ear of Leonora's father.
'You just keep your mouth shut. It wouldn't take much to make any of us shoot.' Steven approached, his grey eyes glass, his knuckles white. Halley backed him up and the two remaining younger men closed on each side. David wasn't looking forward to them seeing Nick, chestless, behind the Jaguar. They formed a circle of anger around him.
'Where's Nick?'
Halley answered. 'The other side.'
'Move.'
David did, the iciness of Carrington-Chalmer's stare riveting. They moved as one to where they could view the evidence.
