Oran Lake Ball
Light, wine, and nature. The perfect combination of things to go wrong, for things to shatter. As the guests arrived at the luxury hall, the classic music played until it moved all the Madams' hearts. The banquet screamed elegance inside and out. There was an enormous chandelier hanging in the center as if it was the moonlighting on the dazzling sky.
If you look around, you can identify every guest as one of the most prominent women and men in the country from business, politics, medicine to art.
"So you are happy about this?"
Mayleen didn't answer right away, "Well, I am not unhappy."
"Are you sure?" Ye Han paused, "You know if something goes wrong today, we are going to gain a new enemy."
Mayleen sighed and whispered, "As if I don't have one." with that she smirked as all her emotions faded, and facial expression hidden under the black mask with feathers she had on her face. Yes, today was Zong Guozhi's banquet. The special theme was a Masquerade Ball.
Small groups of people in charming costumes talked and drank.
"Fifty-six people out of sixty showed up tonight." Guozhi's pleasant voice carried through the room. "Not bad." He looked at each one guest. "It is such an honor to have you all. As you may know, I am not fond of birthdays parties. However, today is memorable not because it is my birthday, but because today my heir, Zong Mayleen, is officially in charge of the Zong Family."
Whispers overcame the room from corner to corner. Yet very few dared to look at Mayleen directly. Mayleen who hid in the crowd beamed, or that was what her mask allowed to see. Minutes later, applause filled the ball. Zong Guozhi gave his last grateful words and started the party.
When the guests were about to dance, an enormous light spotted the center of the hall. The girl in the center was wearing a silver full-skirted ball gown with small white gloves, flats, big silver earrings. Her mask shined, the lace scroll highlighted her defined and sweet jaw and thin lips.
Gasps and whispers filled the room.
Once again, people were curious about the young girl. Who wouldn't? They can assure by heart, the girl was one of the prettiest at the masquerade ball.
With the beat of the violin and piano, she danced around weaving ribbons that colored the dark hall. The ribbons were the only joy in the watery light of the night. The symphony was the same melody that has sounded through those walls for centuries. Her legs extended like a ballerina, and she glided from place to place, arms held in front, fingertips touching.
Then she felt it.
As she was dancing, she felt the same gaze she met once at the hospital. An electric current went through the girl who was dancing as his eyes met her. He appeared to be about her sister's age, but sometimes it could be tricky, especially with a mask.
And for these two, everything slowed down.
Feng Ci watched her move to the music's compass filling the hall. As she turned, making the ribbons fly around her, her eyes caught him standing there. He dropped his eyes momentarily before looking, his head tilted to one side and a smirk playing on his lips.
When the music came to the end, she bowed to the spectators. Before many young men come to her, she rushed where the devil's temptation was.
"Well done, little princess." The woman in red said.
The girl admired her older sister. Her eyes crystallized as she hugged the woman in red. "Sister Mayleen."
Mayleen gently caressed the girl's head without damaging the beautiful hairstyle with thin braids that her younger sister wore.
"Little princess, didn't you say you can handle the outside word? Don't let me think otherwise," Mayleen whispered. She leaned her head to kiss AhCy's cheek. "This is your time to show me you are recovering and need not go back to the hospital."
Mayleen drove off into the hall and AhCy's was standing there breathless.
One week ago, the doctor informed AhCy's progress to Mayleen. They say she improved a lot. Therefore, now she was on the fifth floor. They allowed her to go outside since she had better control over emotions. Besides, the doctor needed to study her with different factors like crowds. In short, Mayleen thought the masquerade ball would be a good option because nobody would recognize her if something went wrong, also AhCy would face her fear for masks.
AhCy performed as a birthday present to her adoptive father, Zong Guozhi, to who she was in eternal gratitude. Although she was still young, AhCy knew that her sister Mayleen wouldn't be where she was now, if not for the Zong's support.
AhCy looked around and saw many bodyguards secretly protecting her. She noticed it not because she had an expert eye and useful sense, but because she was familiar with their faces already. There weren't many people. Yet she felt they were a lot. Then, little by little, her anxiety and fear grabbed her by the tongue and dry her mouth.
'Need not panic anymore.' AhCy thought. She needed to prove she was fine to her sister or else she would be in the white prison for more time. She was stronger for her battle scars. So instead of letting it take her down, she told herself everything will be alright.
She was breathing harder. Why all the noises concentrated in one? Blurry? Pupils dilated, heart racing, brain on fire, brain synapses firing like a hyped-up internal aurora borealis.
"No. No. No. I can't give up..." AhCy whispered. "I need to be strong...all this is on my mind." As she tried to conform herself, there was someone who never seized to look at her.
When Feng Ci faced her... that stare... She felt once again and her mine playing on its own. Her anxiety vanished to the deepest part of their gleaming gaze.
She glanced at the man across from her. His dark chocolate eyes reflected power and passion, so much ruthless it made her shiver all over. The candlelight shimmered in her eyes, illuminating his entire personality within. It only lasted a moment, but it dissipated all her fears and appeased all his beasts.
"My lady, it would be my pleasure if you accept one dance with me?" Feng Ci asked as he bowed like a knight from the shadows, full of secrets that even the night itself could uncover.
AhCy's celestial green eyes shone behind the mask as she placed her delicate hand in his; he placed his hand on her waist and whisked her onto the ballroom floor, and they turned and twirled as if they were professionals.
On the end of the stairs that led to a large room lit by candles. Mayleen observed the ball like a queen admiring her kingdom.
