NARRATOR'S POV:
Night.
A robed man entered the room. He peered into all the cages. There was a satisfied smile on his face when he left.
"Looks like they've had enough. We'll have them at the main course tomorrow."
"Yes, sir."
Unknown to him, a pair of eyes were watching him from the shadows committing each word spoken to his memory. After the men left, the shadow slipped out of the room. .
The shadow entered a manson. He knelt in front of his master.
"They will act tomorrow. All of the suspicious nobles will be present."
"His Majesty has ordered to purge the nobles engaged in corrupt activities. We will follow his order. Mobilise thirty knights. Capture them all."
"By your will, my Lord."

From her skinny figure, you could see that she was just a child. Hollow-cheeked and lying in tatters; she looked just like any other street urchin.
She was lying, face forward, on a slab of black marble. A runed circle of salt surrounded the altar. Other than a gag, there was no binding on her. They knew she wouldn't try to move.
They were soft, but
Her groans hardly sounded human.
She hardly looked human.
Tangled black raven feathers nested on her head. Bone white skin. Knived eyes glared from behind the dark bushes. They were bright. A couple of priests had averted their eyes.
I wondered.
Is she going to be hurt again?
Something's not right.
They're just watching today.
Maybe she'd been lying there for hours, when the Baron walked up. He was wearing his hood down today, the only one to. His face was shrivelled, and red against the frosty air. His cloak was tucked up high on his neck, high enough to be touching the sides of his jaw. Sunken skin. Bloodshot eyes, the corners tilting down. There were dark veins standing out, going up his cheeks. He had thick eyebrows and a coat over his upper lip and on his chin, but the mop on his head was thin. That was my first impression of him.
"My friends, the time has come for us to meet our destinies!"
A blazing fire flickered up. It crept up, growing larger and stronger near her. She was shivering. I heard the crackle of the flames near me. It was an acidic burn. Too hot. But it was not yet time to act. I need to be patient

"...I'm gonna die like this." She thought.
"How pathetic."
These were her last moments. She wanted them to resemble something happy… her parents? But she didn't remember them. Not them, not anybody from Before. Her first memories were of struggles in the mines.
"This is a most honourable end! Rejoice, you cursed brat!" The leader snapped as he readied the knife.
From somewhere… those mocking words kicked up a furious blaze. Alyssa was surprised at herself. The emotion was strong.
Then -
She felt the knife plunge into her.
And it all blurred.
Her consciousness was fading away.
Her vision went dark.
She didn't choose her last thought.
If only I had more power…
