Ribold's life is turned upside down when his home is destroyed by inquisitors lead by Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere. In their last moments together Ribold's mother, the Twilight Witch, Katharsis Merron sends him to find safety in the forbidden city of Todt Stadt. Ribold can't imagine that Della Rovere and Katharsis Merron will stop at nothing to seize Ribold's potential for their own. For Ribold the only chance at safety is to join the necromancers of Todt Stadt and embrace the dark arts in order to protect himself and his mother from the Cardinal who'll stop at nothing to save his soul.
