Beginning in the 21st century 16-year-old Joyce was gifted an ancient book, from her late father. "The Rites of Guardians" has been in their family for generations.

Joyce was worthy of something greater than she knew; the protection of modern-day society from the magic wielding members of Imperial China. A duty her father had intended on passing down to her. The book itself teems with the lives of the past Xian family Guardians; ready to aid the newest member. This book has challenged Joyce to endure palace intrigue and strategically survive the inner court. By succeeding only then will Joyce be able to prove herself as the right choice to be the new Xian family guardian.

Set in the era of the Tang Dynasty, she becomes the infamous Yang Yuhuan. This is the historical fiction of how she rose through the ranks and how her forbidden romance began and came to an end.
