Chapter 85: Not the right person to ask

Eve swallowed heavily and clenched her fists until her nails, growing longer as they were, sank into her skin. Pain helped her anchor her emotions: her fear, her guilt, her anger. Then Victor reached over the desk to put a hand on her shoulder, and it helped some more.

"So what do we do about them?" she asked, fighting to keep her voice strong.

"You do nothing. Keep as you were and don't let them on anything I told you. I will keep investigating. Whoever they are, whatever they want, I won't let them get to you, Eve."

Victor spoke with such stalwart conviction and determination, that Eve couldn't help but believe him even when a nagging worm of thought in her mind kept repeating that in real life things always went astray, eventually.
