In the future, there exists a term: DMMO-RPG.
That word was an acronym for "Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game".
These games were played by connecting the console to the brain via a neuronal nano-interface. This is the gear that allows the players to enter the game and experience the virtual world as real life.
However, there were limitations. The scent, taste and especially the sense of touch have been omitted in order for players to separate themselves from the real world.
Any DMMO-RPGs had to abide by strict rules that forbid adult-rated actions, including the inappropriate touching of other players. It was for this reason players were kept under close watch so that in the case that these did occur, the accused player's account will be deleted immediately.
And among the myriad DMMO-RPGs that thronged the market, one of them expected to stand above the others was… Yggdrasil.
This game had been painstakingly developed, advertised like there was no tomorrow. Finally, it was released in 2126. It was an open-world exploration game where knowledge was key, nothing other than the controls were given to the players.
This has put a high value on new information about the game. New classes, items and locations were always found, but rarely intentionally shared publicly to not give other players the advantage.
To put into perspective how massive this fame actually was, the game's 12-year lifespan, only 30% of the game's nine worlds were mapped.—
—In the year 2126, 26th of April, 8 pm, within a dark and silent room, Noel was staring at the dive headgear in his hands. He was trembling in excitement. He had been waiting for a long time for this day, and today was the day he was going to finally play.
After all, Noel Branwell was not of this world. He was reincarnator who wished to be super rich in his next life. He wanted to use this money to live an easy life. He wanted to travel and see what the world has to offer.
But this dream was quickly forgotten and new one was created after Noel realised he had reincarnated into the dystopian world. This was the world where the anime 'Overlord' whose protagonist lived before transmigrating to the New World.
To live a better life, Noel came to a decision to transmigrate along with Momonga into the New World. He simply refused to stay in this world where Earth was highly polluted to the point the sky was always hidden behind black smog.
Noel could have asked his new family to come with him… well that was if he had one to begin with. In this life, he was an orphan as a result of his wish. Both of his parents died in a alleyway in Mathog city, leaving him behind with no relatives. As such, he became an orphan with a hefty amount of money that could last him for ten lifetimes.
As a result, Noel did not go to school as there was no need to. He was rich and had long decided to gamble everything on Yggdrasil and transmigrate into the body of his avatar.
While waiting for the game to release, he wasn't lazing around and trained his body and learned different types of martial arts. This was because, through gaming online forums, he learned that martial arts would help him in full dive games like Yggdrasil, especially for players that went for the warrior path.
And so several years passed and it was today Noel was finally going to start playing the game. A headgear was in his lap as he sat on his gaming chair; he was ready to play.
"It's okay, I got this. Link Start!" Noel excitedly pumped himself up as he laid on his chair and put on his helmet. Gently pushing the button on the back of his helmet, he immediately lost consciousness.
The next time Noel opened his eyes again, he found himself passing through a multicoloured tunnel. The next few seconds, he arrived in an empty room with a screen and texts appearing before his eyes.
Welcome to Yggdrasil!
This is a game of exploration and freedom.
You! The player shall explore the world of Yggdrasil and unveil its mysteries...
Please choose a race.
"I choose Angel."
This was the obvious choice for Noel. He did not want to be a basic bitch and chose to be a human. Most importantly, he imagined having wings and having the ability to transform like a final boss looked cool.
Plus, like any other game, there was always the chance to change his appearance with items.
Please name your character.
Noel had chosen to go with his real name. After all, if he were to transmigrate and name his character a name like Godslayer 69, he would die of embarrassment.
Successfully created a character name. The character Noel Branwell has been created...
The sight before Noel immediately blurred as he was sent away.
The Beginner Town, the buildings that were chaotically arranged and built a similar style to the middle ages. Skeletons, slimes who were the players who choose to be part of the Heteromorphic race filled the bustling streets.
In the middle of the town, Noel arrived. His appearance was humanoid resembling a white block of metal in religious tattered robes.
"I should top up on credits first and spin some gachas. 50 million yen should be enough…"
12 years later
A gigantic table carved of gleaming black stone sat in the centre of the room, surrounded by forty-one luxurious chairs.
However, most of those seats were empty.
Once, every single seat had been filled, but now only two were occupied.
One of the seated people was clothed in a magnificent black academic robe, edged in violet and gold. The collar seemed excessively gaudy, but somehow it fit the overall design.
However, the exposed head was a bare skull. Points of dark red light glowed in its large eye sockets, and behind that skull glowed a halo of black radiance.
The being in the other seat was not human either, merely a mass of a black, sticky substance. Its tar-like surface roiled and writhed continuously, never staying in the same shape for more than a second.
The former was an Overlord — the highest-ranked of those magic casters who had become undead to learn the most potent spells. The latter was an Elder Black Ooze, which boasted the most powerful corrosive ability of the slime family.
One might encounter these monsters in the most difficult dungeons. Overlords could use powerful spells of the highest tiers of magic, while Elder Black Oozes were dreaded for their ability to degrade weapons and armour.
However, they were not game monsters, but players.
In YGGDRASIL, players could choose their character races from three broad groups; humanoid, demi-human and heteromorphic.
Humanoids were the basic player type and comprised humans, dwarves, wood-elves, and the like. Demi-humans tended to be unattractive, but possessed superior attributes to humanoids. Examples of demi-humans are goblins, beast-men, ogres, and so on.
Finally, heteromorphic races had monstrous abilities, but despite their stats being generally higher than those of other races, they also possessed various drawbacks. There were around seven hundred playable races in total, including the advanced versions of these races.
Naturally, the Overlord and Elder Black Ooze were among the high-tier heteromorphic races that were playable.
These two players belonged to the legendary guild Ainz Owl Gown. The skeleton was the leader, Momonga, and the slime was one of its members, Herohero.
This guild had 41 members who were all part of the heteromorphic race. They overcame all challenges and fought against the oppression of the other races.
One of the guild's most notable achievements was conquering the dungeon known as the Great Tomb of Nazarick and making it their guild headquarters. After turning it into the greatest evil lair of all Yggdrasil, no one has ever reached the highest floor.
There was even a time when the Great Tomb of Nazarick had managed to overcome the largest player-organised military offensive in the server's history.
Eight guilds banded together with their allies to bring a force of over fifteen hundred players, mercenaries, and NPCs to conquer Nazarick but were finally defeated on the 8th Floor.
However, all of that was in the past. Today was the last day of the game as the two members of the guild were talking and reminiscing about the old times.
"It's been a while, Herohero-san. Although this is the last day of YGGDRASIL, I didn't expect you to show up."
"Indeed, it has, Momonga-san. What have you been up to lately?"
"I've been playing in my spare time with Noel."
"Noel? Oh! him..."
Meanwhile, at the entrance of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Noel could be seen in his human form. He had acquired this by using one of the consumable twenty World-class items, [Orouboros]. With this item, one could wish for anything reasonable such as an increase in stats, Yggdrasil currency, etc.
Noel had used the item to request the developers to give him a human form. This gave him many benefits, such as the restriction of the Heteromorphic race being removed. He could walk into cities without getting attacked and if players killed him, they would be penalised.
Although using such an overpowered item was very wasteful, Noel did not care. It was worth it considering he was able to obtain his manhood and a handsome face too perfect to be describe... or, so he wanted to believe.
In the end, Noel only made some minor adjustments to his real-life appearance. His medium-length hair was as black as Terry Crew's and styled messily, whilst his eyes were changed to a gold colour that resembled the sun. He made his facial features sharper while making his skin smoother and fairer. Of course, he could not hold himself back and increased his height and di** size to a satisfiable degree
Thus, although far from perfect, Noel was still handsome in his own right. He possessed that type of face that stopped you in your tracks, like young Leonardo DiCaprio and a body that could pure Greek Gods to shame.
As for his equipment, Noel was wearing a black light leather armour, which perfectly outlined his well-built body. Strapped to his waist was a silver broadsword and just like his armour, it was simple yet stylish.
And so 12 years have passed since Noel started playing the game. Every day was an adventure, with the sole purpose of creating the strongest character in the game.
Back then, Noel had woken up early, went for a run before going to the gym and practice martial arts with the instructors he hired every day. He had over 20 years of experience in martial arts such as Boxing, Kung fu (Wing Chun), Kenjutsu and Muay Thai, etc. With games like Yggdrasil that let him practice the martial arts he had learned, he was basically Batman minus the crime-fighting and the butler.
All of this hard work was so that Noel could improve his health, as well as to give him the advantage against other players in Yggdrasil. As a result, he had no life outside Yggdrasil, all his friends were made in the game. Nevertheless, he did not regret anything and it had been quite the journey.
Even to this day, Noel could still clearly remember what he did on the first day of the game. He had paid off a bunch of players to be his meat shield and spent 50 million yen on the gacha system just to get a few valuable cash items.
"Ahh, the good old days."
Noel reminisced all of those times, spending money like it was nothing. Because of this, he was known as the Tycoon of Yggdrasil. He was a solo player and every player in Yggdrasil knew about him.
The players knew who to contact and sell their new information. Of course, some tried to sell him fake information, but little did they know that was a big mistake.
Every player who messed with Noel was all gone from the game. An example would be the time a guild leader from a certain guild had sold him fake information.
Out of anger, Noel had placed a bounty on every member of that guild. Not long after, they were all killed until their levels dropped to zero and were forced out of the game.
Anyway, with new information like the discovery of a new dungeon, Noel would share this information with famous guilds and go out and attack it together. With his high damage build and a vast amount of cash items in hand, he was without a doubt one of the strongest players in Yggdrasil.
Noel was a precious asset to any guild and by giving the guild 85% of the loot after the dungeon raids, only a fool would refuse to work with him.
This was how Noel operated as a solo player and how his name was known throughout Yggdrasil. But, all of that was in the past and today was the day most important day of his life, as it was the day whether or not his gamble would pay off.
In the past week, Noel has been in contact with all the prominent players of Yggdrasil, except Momonga and his guild since he didn't want to mess with the plot.
To prepare for his transmigration, he had bought all the items in their inventory. This included divine class, World-class, Guild-class and anything valuable.
All the players were confused why Noel would spend such a large amount of money on items going to disappear forever by next week. But, no one questioned it as long as they were making money.
Hence, all his equipment which appeared to be simple and stylish was actually ranked above Divine-class items. He had customised his equipment through data crystals, which were dropped by monsters.
Data crystals were what enabled every aspect of customisation in the game. By combining data crystals and creator tools, it allowed unlimited in-game customisation. Everything from the colour, shape and style of the player armour, everything could be customised.
Data crystals could also be used to customise NPCs. They could be designed and create their build in any way that a player could imagine. From personalities, appearances and abilities could be dictated by the player's choice of racial and job class levels, as long as the player possesses enough data crystals and meet the requirements.
In Yggdrasil, the equipment was classified according to how much data each item possessed. Items with more data were ranked higher. From the lowest to the highest rank, they were low class, middle class, high class, top class, legacy class, relic class, legendary class and, divine class.
Above those were guild items, world champion items and World-class items. Players who are lucky enough to come into possession of even one of the World Items could easily shake the game's power balance.
Noel had customised all his equipment, which was a mixture of Divine, Guild, World Champion and World class items, to be invisible beside his armour and sword. This was because he had fun dressing up in rookie gear and loved trolling player killers.
Thus, here he was now standing in front of the Great Tomb of Nazarick, Noel was now fully prepared to enter to transmigrate along with Momonga.
Of course, Noel could not let Momonga know he was here. He was afraid of giving away his presence and thus causing the transmigration would fail. So, Noel was basically a stowaway and Nazarick was the vehicle while Momonga was the driver
Raising his left hand, he checked the time.
Noel was just in time. The server would shut down at [00:00].
There was little time left. The virtual world would end, and it was the time he was going to find out whether or not he would be transmigrated along with Momonga.
Moving a few steps forward, he noticed a spacious hall. The floor was polished limestone and in front of him was a set of double doors, which one could access the First Floor of the Great Underground Tomb of Nazarick.
Opening the door, he spotted a flight of stairs leading down and sat down on one of them.
[23:59:48, 49, 50]
Glancing at the time on the HUD interface, Noel closed his eyes and hoped the system would not automatically log him out.
The countdown finished.
Noel opened his eyes...
