Ayo tilted his head with a gentle scratch on his head while Funmi was already beginning to panic, scared that she might have done something to irk him. She was a timid girl to begin with but the Ayo these past few days had managed to bring out her timidity in a plus-ultra kind of way.
"Are you fine?"
She managed to ask again but Ayo did not answer.
He finally turned his head a bit higher, looking to the left and then to the right. The place the both of them stood was on the walkway between residential homes, it was rural, maybe it was because of the recent monster and gate happenings the place seemed like a deserted street.
But really, everyone was probably just too scared to come out. The world was undergoing a phase. Don't we all do it eventually?
"Give me a minute Oluwafunmilayo."
Even though he had launched himself into the sky, Funmi's face was still blushing. In Nigeria, names are often given with suffixes and prefixes, most time they paint and complete the true meaning of names.
For example, Funmi meant 'give me' but when the name is pronounced with its suffixes and prefixes, it becomes Oluwafunmilayo, 'God gave me joy'
For someone who was used to having been called Funmi all her life, being called Oluwafunmilayo made her feel special. Especially, since it was coming from Ayo.
"I really don't like the fact that you are lurking. Who are you and what do you want? I'd have preferred the direct approach you know."
The man who was still peeking at them, trying to figure out why Ayo suddenly disappeared into the air became so startled that he almost fell but Ayo held his clothes.
"Who are you and what do you want?"
He asked, he was holding with all five fingers but after asking they remained four. The man knew wassup that way–the fingers were a countdown from five. Keep your silence and your head might probably shatter on the ground.
"I-I was sent."
'Of course'
Ayo rolled his eyes lazily.
"By who?"
"Uhh..."
The finger was remaining three.
"B Y W H O?"
The finger reduced to two. It was kind of amazing how Ayo was still keeping a strong grip on the guy with only his thumb and index finger.
"I'll speak..."
"I know you'll speak... maybe when you eventually die." Ayo tilted his head with a gloomy stare.
"Surveillance!"
"Surveillance?"
"Yes. With the things that have been recently happening, a list of people who have awakened has been drafted out. The government has assigned people like us to keep surveillance and report to them"
"Why will the government do such a thing? Are they mad?"
"According to what I heard. They are about to create an association."
Ayo sighed, even in the world he was from the government won't hesitate to use crises to create some new department that will begin to operate things. This was not surprising but something was uncomfortable.
It is not possible that a list of awakened humans is just drafted, or maybe if there was someone that had the ability to detect awakened humans, it would make more sense.
For him, his laziness system could just inform him, or he could sense it in their breathing pattern which goes as far as informing him of their body composition and for awakened humans, their energy.
Ayo's hand was below his chin as he entered deep thoughts. The other two fingers were still holding the guy.
He was not sure how the system worked for other people but he was very sure that he has a different system from most of them. Another thing he wasn't sure about is; if he was the only one with a different system, for all it's worth, someone else could be out there having 'a hardworking system'
'I bet he'd be ten times stronger than I am'
Ayo chuckled at the thought of it.
"Excuse me sir... can you l-l-let go n-n-now?" The man asked, pleading with teary eyes.
"Let him go."
Ayo's pupils drifted to the side.
Of course, he knew before that they were two so he wasn't surprised. But this guy was pointing a gun at him, should he be worried? He wondered.
"Hey, hey, put the fuxking gun down!" The guy Ayo's two fingers were barely holding shouted.
His hand was shaking even though they held the gun tightly and his brows furrowed such that they showed his struggles to make a decision.
Ayo was still not paying any special attention to him. He pulled the guy up and turned.
"I don't have a problem with you people, but the next time you sneak up on me. I will kill you."
Ayo jumped off the building after making that clear. Even though he had jumped off a two-story building, he was still fine.
They could see him walking away with Funmi. They didn't know particularly what to be surprised by. The fact that this teenage boy had just jumped off a two-story like it was nothing or the fact that girl wasn't even surprised about it.
"Hey, out of all the guys we were given a list of, how many were able to discover us?"
"None bro... I almost pissed my pants." The guy that held the gun from before said, heaving one hell of a heavy sigh. He touched his chest to make sure he was still breathing and took a brief breathing exercise to help regulate his tense state.
In such a short time, both of them had been put in a very tight situation, hell in no way that guy is a teenager.
They looked at him one last time as he faded into the distance with his female colleague.
"Well, let's go... we have a long list to cover."
