Matt Hammond, born to a poor family, is hopeful that his future will take him to the vaunted Academy of Paladins, the school where all the chosen master their powers. On the day of his sixteenth birthday - divination day - he is not surrounded by the golden glow that heralds a chosen one. Instead, his orb is muddy brown, with naught but a mysterious spear occupying it.

Will Matt grab the spear and pierce his way through to the heavens? Or will he fall by the wayside, one of the many powerless to stand up to the chosen?
