Chapter 34: Chapter 34 : Commotion in the corridor (1)

All sorts of gaze landed on me as soon as I stepped into the classroom. Their gazes were even more prickling than usual. A pin-drop silence descended upon the classroom, making my footsteps sounded louder than it should. After I settled myself on my chair, I opened my book and feigned ignorance to all whispers around me.

"Look at her. I bet she just came back after crying in the bathroom. Poor girl."

"She must be devastated by this morning's news. Who could blame her though? The outcome is already certain."

"I guess today and tomorrow will be the last time I see her. Thank god for that."

"Still trying to put on a calm facade. She is clearly at fault for her misconduct, yet here she is, acting like a model student. She is so pretentious. Then again, seeing her crying and whining about it will be even more annoying. It's good she knows her place, at least."

"You know, is it strange I kinda feel bad for her?"

"Stop that! It's not our fault, okay? Why should we feel bad? She brought this upon herself!"

"Yeah. With her gone, our chance to get the first ranking in the exam will increase. She had been hoarding the title ever since her first year. Now it's finally our time to shine!"

"Those bullies also wouldn't show up in our class and disturb us anymore! Good riddance to a loser like her!"

At this point, I was too lazy to gauge everyone's reaction, so I kept my eyes glued to my workbook without paying any attention to what they were saying anymore. Not long after that, the bell for the first period rang, and every student went back to their seats.

After the first period ended, I stood up and walked out of the classroom. Earlier, Mrs. Victoria messaged me to come to visit her at the infirmary on the first break. I guessed she wanted to ask me about this morning's announcement too. She probably worried about me.

As I thought about that, I hastened my steps. However, after a few steps, I bumped into someone while trying to take a turn in the corridor. The collision was not that hard, but it's enough to send me staggering behind a few steps.

The impact got my mind muddled for a second, while the person whom I collided with berated me immediately in a loud voice.

"Are you blind? Watch where you are going?!"

I heard that voice and resisted the urge to sigh at my unluckiness. Out of all people and all times, why must it be them I encountered?

I slowly lifted my gaze and met with Beatrice's contemptuous glare. Behind her, Lorena and Carla also looked at me with concealed scorn in their eyes. Carla's act was better than Lorena though since compared to her stiff face, Carla still managed to put a slightly anxious expression on her.

"I don't understand why the likes of you are still roaming around this school! If they are going to expel you anyway, then they should have done so sooner. Why wait for another day?" Beatrice's scolding voice reverberated in the corridor, making the other students stop in their tracks to glance at us with a face full of interest.

"I am sorry for bumping into you," I said. Fully aware that it wouldn't end with just a simple apology, but I still did it anyway.

Beatrice snorted as she forcefully shoved me aside. "Scram. Such a waste of space. Why don't you learn your place and just obediently leave this instant? It will at least save a little amount of face you have!" Beatrice snickered as she looked at me mockingly. "Why? Are you hoping that the situation would work out somehow? That the committee member will listen to excuses coming from your filthy mouth? You sure dream big!"

Her malicious comment invited snickers from every direction. Some even openly laughed out loud, as if what Beatrice just said sounded funny to them.

Beatrice approached me with a wicked smirk as she used her index finger to push my temple repeatedly. Her push grew harder with each stroke. "Aren't you supposed to be very smart? Rather than wasting your time reading the textbook, why don't you learn to read the mood instead? Can't you see that everybody is looking forward to you disappearing? You don't know? Well, why don't you know when you are so smart?!"

I pressed my lips in a thin line without saying anything. Beatrice flashed a satisfied grin at my compliant attitude, so she took it upon herself to attack me again. This time, she smacked my head repeatedly using her palm, as if trying to crush a mosquito. Her smack was not that hard, but the shame it brought upon me was tremendous.

I couldn't fight back, lest it made my list of 'misconduct' become longer. Around this time, I really couldn't afford to offend anyone anymore. Yet, as I let them disgrace me like this, I wondered why I tried so hard to bear this humiliation. What's so good about graduating from this kind of school anyway? This suffocating place is filled with those who like to bully the weak. What's so good about it?

"What? Why are you looking at me like that?" Beatrice's hand which she used to smack my hand stopped moving. Then in the next second, she used her same hand to yank my hair and threw me to the ground.

I winced in pain as my body landed on the floor roughly. I barely collected my wits when Beatrice once again pulled my hair upward. She didn't hold back at all, making my scalp sting painfully. "Is our little Eirlys finally can't hold it anymore and want to rebel? You were very daring to knock out Michelson the other day, aren't you going to do the same to me? Try it then!"

"Please, stop it!" I said while moving closer to Beatrice in an attempt to lessen my pain. But Beatrice didn't give me that chance as she pushed me to the ground again.

Beatrice laughed at the sight of my pathetic display of resistance. "Well? Aren't you gonna attack me? Try it then! Let them see how wild and savage you are! No need to hold back. Everybody already knows who you are after all. The daughter of a cold-blooded killer! Show them how your father killed your mother!"

BA-THUMP!

My heart seemed to stop for a moment as my blood rushed through my head. The sensation made me dizzy as I tried hard to collect myself. However, my attempt was fruitless as I started to remember those memories again. A nightmarish memory of that horrible night.

Beatrice's mocking voice sounded so far away right now. The sight in front of me slowly changed from a crowded corridor into a dark room. A small and cramped living room. Outside, the thunder was roaring, and I could hear someone's crying.

The lightning flashed as the rain poured down heavily. The light shone upon the dark, cold room, revealing a brief glimpse of two stacked people in the middle of the room, lying in a pool of blood. The pungent smell of rust that filled the space was so thick, it made one want to retch.

In that small room, I felt cold and afraid to the bone. I didn't understand why everything had to turn out this way. My younger self was subconsciously aware that I was on my own from then. They left me alone in this world. Fear and sadness crept into me like a tidal wave, drowning me with a sense of despair.

From a distance, there was a loud sound of footsteps. Then, somehow the door broke down, followed by screams of people. Startled by the screams, the sound of crying stopped. I finally stopped crying as I gazed at those people. Their eyes looked at me fearfully, as if they were looking at a terrifying monster.

Instinctively, I knew they were here to save me. I didn't know who they were, but one thing for sure, I wanted them to take me away from there. The light coming through the gap of the door behind them looked like the light of salvation. So I reached out my hand to them. The hand was covered in blood.

However, the one thing I would never forget was their horrified expression as they took a step back and muttered, "She truly is the child of misfortune."

"A cursed child!"

"Don't come near her or her bad luck will infect you!"

The only thing that remained after that, was the sound of thunder roaring so loudly outside.

"Hey! Are you listening to me?!" Beatrice yelled beside my ear. Her confused expression turned into an infuriated one after she noticed I was daydreaming amid her 'lecture'.

With so much effort, I shoved away that terrible memory out of my mind, as I tried to collect myself. I didn't expect Beatrice took that as an insult to her since her palm was flying down on my cheek in a resounding slap.

The burning feeling on my cheeks somehow became the one that made me regain my senses back. I didn't know whether I should feel thankful or not.

"You imbecile! How dare you ignore me?!"

Beatrice was still yelling furiously beside my ear when Carla suddenly shouted in a concerned voice, "Stop it, Bea! That's enough!"

Both Beatrice and I turned our heads simultaneously at her interruption. Beatrice looked at Carla incredulously. However, in the next moment, a clicking sound of a heel could be heard, followed by a woman's yell.

"What are you guys doing?!"

I turned my head to the source of the voice. From the corner of the corridor, I saw the slender figure of Mrs. Victoria approached us. The end of her white lab coat fluttered around her as she walked briskly. From her upset expression, I had a feeling she brought another storm with her.
