The Warden of Aeulheim
[Aeulheim] is one of the last surviving keyboard-and-mouse MMORPGs in a world dominated by Virtual Reality a.k.a Full-Dive Games. Due to it's last update, the players magically found themselves residing in the bodies of their game avatars. With Game Moderators being unreachable and log out function being disabled, the players spent their first few days fearfully trapped in a game they once loved as they witnessed the deaths of fellow players. News soon spread that resurrection is possible. Apparently, they only needed to set cathedrals located in major cities as their spawn point. A few days later, this news was confirmed as a dumb/brave man who ventured too far from the safe zones died and revived on the same night The confirmation of the revival function brought drastic changes. Players soon became relaxed. They continued hunting monsters and amassing gold while others were killing fellow players and and ruling over NPCs. While others were engrossed in the game, Blake had long thought that the game had hidden some secrets. The NPCs, The Monsters, The Items, The Players. Everything is linked through the Will of Aeulheim, which is technically the game system. Countless Secrets are hidden on plain sight and the clues can be found with a simple call of the "Status" or "Inventory". "This is not a simply a game" he said. Items? Gold? Equipment? Skills? Class? Ranking? Quests? Titles? Soon, most the players will find out that these things are only secondary. They couldn't rely on these things permanently. Monsters? Bosses? They are nothing compared to fear of changes that came along with the game. Respawn? Resurrection? Revival? Immortality? Soon, they will despair as they realize that the thing they relied the most on could not even help them against the greatest threat to their very own Existence. —————————— My writing speed is slow and I don't have much time on my hands so I'll only post updates 3x a week. The temporary schedule would be M/W/F. Any updates might be released earlier or later depending on the circumstances. However due to a debilitating illness that he contracted as a child he has lived his entire life in pain and a large portion of it bedridden. Luckily a new Gaming tycoon has emerged with the method that may allow him to live a somewhat normal life. His body will be placed in stasis while a cure is found. Meanwhile his mind will be uploaded to The AETHER UNLEASHED, a new VRMMORPG that is so real many will begin to doubt if it's just a game. What does technological development have in store for us? Our nature is grounded in the basest of human feelings. Still, until recently I had no idea just how big the problem actually was. I’d spent twenty years of my life writing books about war, space exploration and artificial intelligence, firmly believing that humanity kept progressing morally as well as technologically. Still, my experience writing LitRPG has forced me to change my mind. In order for my books to be believable, I spent a lot of time playing online – and the truth lurking behind some of the players’ avatars horrified me. The anonymity of the Internet tends to reveal what’s usually concealed by the veneer of civilization. As I worked on the Phantom Server and Neuro trilogies, I still harbored some faith in humanity. But as I approached the task of writing Edge of Abyss, I did so in the firm belief that each human heart conceals a slew of vices which can break loose the moment a person tries on a virtual mask and acquires a taste for anonymity and impunity within game worlds. We might actually invent full-immersion virtual pods quite soon, allowing us to experience whole new worlds first hand. The sheer thought makes my blood run cold. There’s a high danger of us losing what’s human about us, ultimately degenerating and eventually becoming extinct. And when we do realize the danger, it might be too late to do anything about it. This is basically what my Respawn Trials series is about. -
