Kapitel 2: Chapter 2

August 31, 2020

Dear diary, A week has passed since I gained admission, and now, I'm ready for school. I had all my documents, foodstuffs, new clothes, shoes, sandals, exercise books etc.

We weren't wealthy, but we more than okay in my family. I left with my aunt on this day, very early in the morning. Aunt Debrah works at EKSU as a lecturer who tutors French.

I was overjoyed when packing my bags for school. Finally, I too would start posting pictures on my social media, just like my friends.Inside the bus, I did a few videos and posted them on my social media, with the caption, "EKSU, here I come".

I made sure that my shopping of clothes, shoes and sandals we're done by me and no one else.. I had to fit in with my peers, and look fashionable like everyone of them.

My friends always told me about how University life was far different from secondary school and I too, was about to experience that.

My aunt hired someone to drive us to our location in her car. She kept on telling me to focus on my studies and not to follow bad friends.

I kept on telling her, that I was a big girl and I could handle myself. On getting to the location, which is EKSU, I was totally amazed by the view, the huge building in front of the school then the two gates by the left and right.

The air in Ekiti smelt dry, and different. We left Lagos by 6:00am and arrived in Ekiti by 1:45pm.

The driver was careful when driving but still drove above the speed limit.. The burning sun wasn't smiling on us either. My aunt's place was located at some place called iworoko.

It was a ten minute drive from the school.

Aunt Debrah wasn't married, so she lived alone in her two bedroom flat. We drove in after the driver came down to open the gate. He parked in front of my aunt's house.

I have never visited my aunt in Ekiti before. I only visit her in Lagos State, every once in a blue moon. But we had a nice and respectful relationship with each other.

"Usman! Usman!! '.

My aunt yelled at the top of her voice. She looked really tired while stretching her legs.

"Madam!".

A middle-aged dark skinned man rushed out of the house. Removing his cap as a sign of respect as soon as he got to my aunt.

"Take these bags inside". My aunt said wiping sweat from her forehead, because of the harsh weather.

"Yes ma". He replied, running to the back of the vehicle.

"I hope Dike has already prepared our meals?" .

She asked touching her temple.

"Yes ma".

Usman replied busy removing the luggage from the car.

"Laura?".

My aunt called my attention.

"Yes aunty".

I replied squinting my eyes, trying so hard to see her face.

"Go inside. You've had a long trip, I know you are already tired. As Dike to show you your room, after that, take your bath, then come down to my room, I have a few things I want to say to you".

She said the last part tapping my shoulder. I smiled at her and walked inside the house. The house looked really nice and homely.

There was a home theatre the sitting room, sofas of various colors, an LED TV, an air conditioner and also a dinning area.Aunt Debrah was only 35 but she looked like she was in her early twenties.

She was a really beautiful light skinned woman. She wasn't the richest but, she was comfortable with what she had.

This also made me love her more.Inside the house, I called out to whoever the name bearer was.

A light skinned man dashed out in an apron. This man was indeed handsome, with his five o'clock shadow, black hair, heart shaped pink lips, arched bushy brows, brown eyes and a button nose.

I didn't hear him call out to me, because I was busy ogling at him.

"Yes ma?. You called?".

His deep masculine voice brought me back to reality.

"Yes… ye… yes.. Hi, I'm Laura, Laura Ajayi".

I stuttered.A smile tugged at his lips as I stuttered.

"You must be Madam Debrah's cousin?" .

I nodded at his question.

"You recently got admitted into Ekiti state University? ". I nodded again.

He smiled.

"Congratulations dear".

He said winking at me.

Hold up!.

Is this guy flirting with me?!.

"Can you please show me my room?" . I asked scratching my head nervously. He nodded, and gestured for me to follow him. I never had a boyfriend in my entire life.

Dad forbade it, he always said it was a waste of time and just a flimsy excuse for a distraction.

Dad always said boyfriends weren't need until I was done with my NYSC.I followed Dike into a room just four steps from the kitchen.

The room was painted in green and velvet red. There was a huge king sized bed in the room.

I was amazed at how big the room was. It had a ceiling fan, and also a standing fan. The room smelled like sunshine also, maybe because of the air freshener.

Dike left my room after telling me to ask him if I needed anything. I was blushing when he winked at me again.I sat on the bed, it felt so soft. I laid on it and hummed a song.

Five minutes later, my phone started ringing. I looked at my phone to assume whom the caller was. It was dad. I smiled and answered it.

"Good afternoon daddy".

I said cheerfully.

He chuckled over the phone while I rolled my eyes.

"I can tell from your voice that you are very happy to be there".

He said. "I would have loved it, if you actually were in the University of Ibadan just like your sister Rebecca.". He sighed.

" All I just want to tell you is, that you should focus, on your studies. Don't mix with the bad crowd, cause, I know how you get when it comes two friends, boys, but I trust you and I just hope you focus on your studies, and make me proud

. I hope you don't end up regretting the reason for taking the course you decided to choose, and I hope you end up coming out of university in flying colors."

He said at a length.

I felt like crying, because I knew deep down, deep deep down my dad, he doesn't really trust me like I thought he would.

I just wished he would give me the same kind of love and attention he gives to my elder sister Rebecca, but, it seems like things can't always go the way you want them to. I nodded.

" Yes daddy. I'll put your words into consideration and make sure I come out of this school in flying colors". I said, trying hard not to sniff as tears went down my cheeks.

"Good girl. Take good care of yourself. I'll call to check up on you. Bye dear". He said.

"Bye daddy".

I replied, ending the call. Sometimes, I wish my mum was still alive. If she was here right now, she would know things to say to make me feel at ease, to make me feel happy, to make me feel like everything is going to be alright.

But all I know is, I've got myself, my sister, God on my side.

I've only locked the door leading to the bedroom, I took off my clothes still sobbing, what into the bathroom turned on the shower, stepped inside and took my bath.

I let the cold running water wash away my sorrow. Everything I felt was washed away by the cold running water. After the bath I felt a lot better.

After coming out of the shower, I searched around for my bags but could not find them. Well I guess Usman man hasn't brought them to my room yet. So, instead I wore the same clothes I wore earlier when coming , which was what I was putting on before.

After wearing my clothes, I dashed out of the bedroom in search of my aunt's room. I saw Dike coming out of a room, and he gestured for me to go inside. 'I guess that her room then'.

I thought.

I entered the room, and there my aunt was, sitting on a sofa near the window in her room. Her room looked a bit different from mine. It was exquisite, beautiful, and very simple at the same time.

"Hey dear. Come sit on the bed".

My aunt said pointing at the bed before me. I smiled and quickly did as she instructed."Do you love your new room?". She asked me.I nodded my head.

"Yes aunt. I do. Thank you". I said smiling at her.

She smiled back at me.

"Now, listen attentively Laura, a university is not a secondary school. It is much more intense, wild and very manipulative depending on the kind of crowd you follow. Laura, I love you and I want the best for you, please make sure you do your best to excel, and follow the good crowd not the bad one. Your family loves you Laura so do I, please, do what right at the right time, you can make mistakes but please, learn from them, okay? ".

My aunt said arching her eyebrow.I smiled sweetly at her. She was indeed the best.

"I understand aunt. And I'll make you proud. I promise".

I said.

"Good girl."

She replied.

"Now, Dike is a 300 level student, studying engineering. He just comes over to cook for me once in a while. So, he's going to take you to school tomorrow and show you where you do your registration and also your department. He is going to be like someone who takes care of you in school. Don't worry, I know him well, he's a very intelligent, brilliant and excellent student. He is also God fearing. So you don't need to worry about anything."

My aunt said at a length.

I felt so happy knowing that I will be in the company of Dike once again. I can't wait for tomorrow.

"Okay aunty" .

I replied.

"Did you get a call from your dad?" She asked curiously.

"Yes I did. Not quite long ago." I replied.

"Okay. Make sure you are awake before 9:00am tomorrow, so that Dike can take you to school and show you around".

She said

"Okay aunty. But Aunt, where are my bags? ".

I asked scratching the back of my head.

"Ohh" .

She smiled before continuing.

"I'm sure it would be in your room by now. " You can go eat and get some rest. I want to sleep ".

She said sounding tired.

I nodded. Thanked her, and left the room.I walked into the dinning area, there my food was already set. It was pounded yam and efo riro. My favorite. I dug in immediately.

As soon as I was finished, I washed my hands, and headed for my room.I closed and locked the door behind me, before laying on the bed.

I checked the time, it was 4:56pm already.I laid on the bed, surfed through the internet, and later put my phone down after two hours.

I couldn't stop thinking about Dike. Soon, I started feeling drowsy, and the breeze which the fan gave, made me drift into dream Land quicker. Before I knew it, I was asleep.
