Kapitel 1: Chapter 1: The Morning Of Her Thirtieth Birthday (Part 1)

Three days before Huang MeiRong turned twenty-six years old, she awoke in a hospital room. The elderly landlady who had found her spent the night in the hospital to ensure her well-being.

Grandma Fang YaGe, the old landlady, had heard a loud thud from her first-floor apartment. She owned a three-story building and rented out the apartment above her own to Huang MeiRong at a very cheap price because she recognized the signs of a girl in need. Kind-hearted, she often shared her meals with Huang MeiRong, knowing the girl couldn't afford her own.

It was a kindness Huang MeiRong felt she could never repay. So, as she listened to the old lady recount the story of rushing upstairs and carefully carrying her body down to her own apartment, where the ambulance found her, Huang MeiRong felt embarrassed and ashamed.

"I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused," she murmured.

"Ah, didn't I tell you to eat all your meals and stay healthy?" Grandma Fang replied quickly, ignoring her apology. "Let's hear what the doctor has to say."

Huang MeiRong would have sat up to bow to her if the stinging pain in her chest hadn't constricted her body. Her chest squeezed inside her, threatening to pop her heart. Her coughing fit alerted Grandma Fang to her deteriorating health. The old woman quickly pressed the nurse button while she patted Huang MeiRong's hair and whispered soothing words.

Because this was a public hospital, and the wing was for ordinary cases, the nurse took a long time to arrive. But when she did, she immediately noticed Huang MeiRong's coughing fit and summoned the doctor through his pager. Doctor Wei entered the room composedly, as if unfazed by Huang MeiRong's condition. He picked up the clipboard hanging from the edge of her bed and quickly scanned it before looking up at Huang MeiRong with a grimace.

"Nurse, close the curtains," he instructed, knowing she would want some privacy when he shared the news. After ensuring the nurse had secured the curtain, he walked to the side of the bed and held up the chart before glancing at Grandma Fang. "Are you family?"

Before Grandma Fang could answer, Huang MeiRong, still wheezing from her fit, replied for her. "She is like a grandmother to me. Please... please, may she stay?"

Doctor Wei felt conflicted. It was against the hospital's policy to keep non-blood relatives in the hospital room beyond visiting hours, but Huang MeiRong looked so young and fragile. He figured she would need all the support she could get after hearing her diagnosis.

"Alright, I shall personally list her down as family," he said, before focusing his gaze on the pale woman. "Mrs. Shen, there is no easy way to say this, but according to this report, a T3 tumor has been located on the left valve of your heart, meaning you are in the late stages of type 3 heart cancer. I'm sure you've been experiencing sudden shortness of breath and chest pains recently."

Huang MeiRong nodded slowly, but she felt a sudden chill crawl down her spine. Grandma Fang took hold of her hand and gently squeezed, trying her hardest not to shed any tears, though she was failing.

"Your metastasis levels are M1, though your lymph nodes remain unaffected, which is some good news," he continued. "This is a very rare cancer. I've never seen it before, so..."

Huang MeiRong stopped paying attention after hearing the word "cancer".

 She had cancer.

Of all the directions her luck could take, it had to be cancer.

First, she lost her baby after discovering her husband's affair with her sister. Then he divorced her, cheating her out of her rightful shares in the company they built together. Due to a series of misunderstandings, her family disowned her. She was left with nothing. She spent the last year working herself to the bone just to pay rent for her apartment, dealing with sexual harassment from her greasy manager at the convenience store and difficult customers during her delivery job.

Huang MeiRong felt a sudden giddiness in her body, and she burst out laughing.

"..." The doctor and Grandma Fang both stared at her as she couldn't stop laughing.

The irony of it all. Her love for those who hurt her had been cancerous in her life, and of all the places an actual cancer could grow, it was in her heart. Ah, God must hate her. She was a fool with hope and she was being punished.

"Mrs. Shen, I know this is all hard to take in, but are you alright?"

"I used to be Mrs. Shen, didn't I?" Huang MeiRong looked thoughtfully at him before tucking her chin to her neck. Tears began to fall uncontrollably as her diagnosis settled in.

A year ago, when she got divorced, she refused to change her name on all her official documents because she felt it was her right, considering she had helped build the name to what it was today. Now, it was her biggest regret. She should have changed it immediately so that if she were to die suddenly, she wouldn't be tied to that cruel man whatsoever.

"Mrs. Shen, I hate to be the bearer of more bad news, but I'm afraid our hospital is not equipped to deal with this kind of cancer. The only thing I can recommend is going to this private hospital in City Y," he handed her a pamphlet he happened to have in his coat pocket." They are one of the few hospitals in our country who have made progress in the research of rare cancers."

"It looks expensive. How can she afford that?" Grandma Fang couldn't help but say aloud.

"I am sorry, but this is all I can do," Doctor Wei said. Just then, his pager buzzed—a new patient had been brought to the ICU. He needed to leave. "I'll come see you again when I have finished my rounds. Hang in there, Mrs. Shen."

With that, the doctor left. Huang MeiRong felt absolutely miserable. What was she to do now? She only had two options: pay for chemotherapy or die. But she didn't have the money for chemotherapy, she had burned through the little money she had finding herself an apartment and buying the fourth-hand scooter. So, her option was death.

Grandma Fang, now wiping the silent tears that fell from her face, stood up with a huff. "Let's go. That stupid doctor barely helped us."

Huang MeiRong looked at the woman with sullen eyes. "Where are we going?"

"Of course, to City Y. It is not far by train, and I'm sure we'll reach there before rush hour. Come, get up, don't make me stand too long on my bad leg."

Huang MeiRong felt as if she were on autopilot. She made no complaint as Grandma Fang helped her gather her belongings, change out of her hospital gown and into the clothes she was wearing the night before. Huang MeiRong discharged herself, then followed after Grandma Fang, like a puppy following its owner.

In no less than four hours, Huang MeiRong stood in the foyer of the private hospital, with her husband glaring at her, holding Huang MingXi to his body, her family surprised but unimpressed to see her.

"Huang MeiRong," Shen ZhiShang said with a venomous tone. "How dare you show your face to me?"
