The author wanted it gone. Uriel's character is too bright to use the sword, knowing it was in a useless state. Previously, he would have put it away and used a different weapon such as his pistol.
Killing the cryptid felt good, but that only lasted until he received the notification that a portion of his reward had gone to waste. Not just that, he also lost Thunderbolt Iron forever and it wasn't just a powerful weapon, it was also a priceless artifact of incalculable cultural value. But worst of all was that even after waiting a long time, the cryptid's entity level orb never appeared.
