Capítulo 85: 85. After School (Liona)

After explaining to Chloe and Allison what had happened at her party and catching them up on everything that had happened since then, Liona braced herself for the bombardment of questions and squeals that followed.

"Oh my Goddess! Liona! How could you not tell us that Erik was your fated mate!" Chloe exclaimed.

"So that's why you were so drawn to him! It all makes sense now! Congrats, Liona!" Alli said as they walked to the parking lot.

"Thanks, girls. But could I ask you two to keep this to yourselves? I really think that Erik will be more comfortable if he's not bombarded by any of our families. Your mom especially, Chloe. If your mom finds out, then my mom will hear about it too, and that means that I will never hear the end of it. I totally promise to tell my parents when the time is right. For now, we just want a little time to get to know one another and grow closer. After we learn to trust each other better, I'm sure he'll be more willing to face the well-meaning questions from my family."

"Why is he so against the rich? It's not like we go out of our way to pick on those with less." Chloe asked.

"I may not understand where his anxiety comes from, yet, but that's why we're dating so that we can talk and learn about each other. I'm sure soon enough he will open up to me, then he'll see that my parents aren't as scary as he thinks they are." Liona explained as they reached her car.

"Well, you can count on us. But from now on, don't leave us in the dark! Or else we might just worry about you too much and say something to our parents. You know, how they manage to get something out of us when they think we are acting suspicious! Remember when we were twelve, and we hid that we broke that vase that had been a gift from some important diplomat acquaintance of your dad's?! The second that we had different stories about what happened, we got the lecture of a lifetime when our parents got together. From now on, if we have to lie to cover for you, we need all the information we can get to help you. But don't expect us to be able to keep it to ourselves forever!" Alli said grimly.

"I know. I apologized for dragging you into that mess in the first place, Alli! I know it was my idea to hide it, but I was scared when we broke it horsing around. My dad wasn't mad, just upset that I hid that we broke it, if you remember, though. My mom was just disappointed in all of us, which I think hurt more than my dad's reaction. If Chloe had been kept in the loop, she wouldn't have accidentally spilled the beans. But we all learned a valuable lesson that day!" Liona giggled.

"And that's always to keep me in the loop!" Chloe giggled.

"Right! The three musketeers! All for one and one for all! We're in this together, we have each other's backs, as long as we know to look out for one another!" Allison cheered as Liona was given a big hug.

"Right! You can count on us!" Chloe smiled.

"I'll have both your backs, no matter what, girls! Just you wait! You'll meet your mates someday too, and then we all can complain and share all the fun times with our mates together, just like our parents!" Liona giggled.

"Yup! Now get outta here! Your mate's probably looking at every customer coming in, hoping to see you!" Allison gave her a gentle push into her car.

After arriving at the fast food place, Liona greeted Erik and his co-workers with a smile before she placed her order for fries and a chocolate shake. It wasn't too busy today, thankfully. After she grabbed a table, she pulled out her homework, figuring she'd keep herself busy by studying and trying to puzzle out the latest head scratching math problems she had to solve. The rest of her homework was rather easy, comparably, so she could put that off until later. As she started to read through the math problems, it appeared that they let Erik take her order to her table when it was ready. As a bonus, he got to sit down with her for a few minutes before he had to get back to work.

"Hey, Lia, I've got your order. I guess you like chocolate?" Erik smiled as he set her order down before sliding into the booth seat across from her.

"Yeah. I absolutely love chocolate! But my absolute favorite is dark chocolate. But for a shake, I'll settle for regular milk chocolate. It's more comfort food than anything." She explained, looking up from her initial read through of her homework.

"What kind of food do you like? Is there anything you can't have?" Erik seemed worried.

"I can eat anything, you don't have to worry, Er. I am not a picky eater, either. I'm sure I'll love whatever your mom makes for dinner." Liona grasped one of Erik's hands in hers and gave it a reassuring squeeze.

"I'm just worried that you won't be able to eat our simple cooking. We don't have the budget to make anything except cheaply made meals." Erik was fretting, she could tell from his slightly elevated stressed pheromones.

"Er. I promise you, that I won't make a fuss over whatever is served tonight. Just because I'm from a family that has money doesn't mean that I can't enjoy simple or cheap food. I'm eating fries at a fast food place as well as a milkshake after all, what's cheaper than this?" Liona honestly thought that fast food was cheap.

Erik looked like he was smiling, but he still seemed nervous, so she changed the subject. "Hey, are you any good at math? Want to help me figure out what the heck my math teacher wants me to solve in this problem? I can't seem to wrap my head around this story problem."

"Let me see…" Erik seemed glad of the change of subject.

After Erik went back to work, time seemed to fly by quickly while Liona worked on her math homework. She took into account that it seemed easier to her after Erik explained how he approached problems like the one she had been stumped over.

When Erik got off work, she packed up her school bag and greeted him again.

"Hey, so I know your school is across town, yet, you managed to be here before me, when my school is just a few blocks away. How is it that you manage that?" She was genuinely curious how that worked.

As they walked out to her car, he explained, "Oh, that's because I don't have a first period class or an eighth period class. I have special permission from the school since I work that I don't have to attend those classes because I'm a senior. It's also because they can't seem to find my school records from my previous schools, so they can't say that I don't have the appropriate credits. They are relying on my mom's assurance that I'm on track to graduate. This allows me travel time to and from school and work."

"Wow, that's cool. I wish I didn't have to attend all my class periods, either. But I'm not very good at school, so I have to attend each one." She sighed as she programmed their destination into her car's nav unit.

"If you'd like, I'll help you with your homework, that way we have more time to spend together when I'm not working. I'd hate to see you fail and get a detention. Weren't you worried about that a few weeks ago? That if you failed and got a detention, you'd also be grounded? Is your family so strict about your grades?"

"My parents only want me to pass, but I feel like I'm letting them down with my grades since they are so bad. I try and try, yet, I don't seem to make much progress while my siblings all get straight A's, which makes me fell like a failure." She tried not to make it seem like it was a big deal to her, but it was, and here she was dumping all this on Erik again.

"Hey, don't let your grades get you down. I'll help you. While I may not be a straight A student because I don't put that much effort into my schoolwork, I do know the system and what teachers look for in a student's schoolwork. It's the same, no matter what school I've attended. Once you know the system and how it works, it's easy to pass without them giving you a second glance. Besides, most of the stuff they teach is far too easy anyway, and I'm usually bored in class." Erik explained.
