Capítulo 7: First Day

Not finding any reason to disagree, Akaeru walked over the the white circle on the dirt field.

"You can do anything in the circle. Hurry, with all your might."

Akaeru liked the little play on words he did there.

"Mhm," Akaeru hummed an affirmation and threw the softball up lightly before catching it. Then, his right arm started glowing green. He figured the way to get the highest distance would be to put his all into speeding both his arm and the ball up at the same time.

He pulled his arm back, picturing the trajectory in his mind. Just before release, he activated his quirk, green spirals covering both the ball and his entire arm up to his shoulder.

The ball left his hand in a blur, a green streak against the blue sky. It shot forward with incredible speed, defying the normal physics of a throw.

He deactivated his quirk in his arm while keeping it activated on the ball. The silence stretched for a beat, then a collective gasp rippled through the class. Heads swiveled to follow the ball's trajectory, a tiny green dot hurtling towards the atmosphere.

Until eventually, they could no longer see the ball.

Aizawa, his usual monotone voice laced with disbelief, finally spoke. "Crazy... Most students struggle to improve their throws with their quirks at all. Distance recorded: Unreadable"

The class erupted into a cacophony of excited whispers. Unreadable? It was a word none of them had expected. How could his throw defy the limitations of the equipment made by UA, the best school? Awed murmurs swirled around Akaeru, a mix of admiration and disbelief.

Aizawa, ever the pragmatist, quickly regained his composure. "While the exact distance is beyond the machine's capabilities," he addressed the class, his gaze lingering on Akaeru for a beat longer, "it's clear Mr. Hado possesses a remarkable quirk with immense potential. However, this also highlights a crucial aspect of hero work: control. Raw power is commendable, but it's useless if you can't harness it effectively."

Annoyed by the slight jab at his capabilities, Akaeru challenged the criticism. "Who says I don't have control?"

"Ah, my apologies, Mr. Hado. I was using you as an example, but it seems like it came out wrong. The point of the test was to see how far you could throw the ball, and you did just that. I wasn't saying you have no control."

"Alright," Akaeru said, falling back into the line of his classmates.

"Actually, wait," Akaeru spoke up, speaking directly to Aizawa.

"This is a quirk assessment test, yeah?"

Aizawa nodded his head with a grunt.

"So why do I have to participate in this? I see no point in showing you the parameters of my quirk when I know my limit just fine."

Aizawa, seeing no flaw in his logic, said, "Seeing as how you were first place in the quirk assessment test, you can sit this one out if you feel you don't need it, but be sure that you can handle the tests after this assessment. The point of this in the first place was to see how far I could push you in training."

Not needing any time to think of a response, Akaeru said, "Then push me as hard as you can. Try to get rid of my arrogance."

"Get rid of your arrogance, huh?" Aizawa repeated, his voice still flat but with a hint of amusement. "An admirable goal, Mr. Hado. But arrogance isn't like a bad habit you can simply flick off. It's a mindset, and changing that requires more than just pushing you physically."

He paused, his gaze scanning the class before settling back on Akaeru. "However," he continued, "there's a fine line between arrogance and confidence. Confidence is a vital tool for a hero, but arrogance blinds you to your weaknesses. It's about striking a balance."

"I can only hope you're mistaking confidence for arrogance, Mr. Hado. Lest it be your downfall."

***

After spending the entire day—and night—after school with Himiko, the next day, Akaeru was in a good mood. That is, until, All Might came crashing through the door during his afternoon class, screaming, "I am… entering normally through the door!"

The change from Akaeru smiling to an expression of annoyance was almost inhuman.

For a moment, just a moment, Akaeru considered becoming a villain because of it.

Drowning himself in thoughts of annoyance, Akaeru wasn't paying attention to anything until he heard All Might yell, "Battle Training," which instantly made him focus up in a veiled excitement.

Looking over, he could see Bakugo next to him was just as excited, though he chose to show it.

"Along with that… are these!" All Might shouted out as numbered compartments slid out of the wall. "The costumes that were made according to your requests and the quirk registration you sent in."

Hearing him, his classmates around him cheered in excitement.

"Once you get changed, meet me at Ground Beta."

Walking along with his classmates who were all dressed up but looking at him oddly, Akaeru and the others entered Ground Beta.

"It's important to start from the look, boys and girls. Be aware that from today, you are heroes!"

"You all look great, guy- Ah, um, Akaeru, did you forget your costume?"

In the midst of everyone dressed up, Akaeru simply wore casual clothes.

"I look good enough without one," Akaeru stated.

"And your hidden identity…?" All Might asked.

"Why would I hide my identity?"

"There's no saying what a villain might do to you or even your family once he figures out your identity, young man."

"So I'll just beat fear into them," Akaeru said as if it was the obvious solution.

All Might coughed, and continued with what he was saying before he started talking to Akaeru. "Anyways, you're all so cool!"

"Let's all get started then, you zygotes!"

"It's time for the battle training!"

Iida, who was in some kind of odd power-rangers costume raised his hand and asked, "Mr. All Might… we used this center for the exam, so will it be a city battle again?"

All Might raised his finger up at Iida. "Nope, we'll go two steps ahead. Most villain battles you see are outdoors. But overall, villains are more likely to appear indoors. Imprisonment, confinement, back room deals… In this society of heroes, clever villains stay in the dark."

"I'll separate you all into hero and villain teams, and the battle will be two versus two."

"When I incapacitate the two people on the opposing team, is that a victory?" Akaeru asked.

"Yes, as long as the two are unable to fight anymore, the team that's able to fight will automatically win."

Hearing that, Akaeru zoned out for the rest of the explanation, confident in winning.

After the explanation was over, before All Might assigned teams, Akaeru said, "There's an odd number of classmates. Can I just be on my own team?"

"Are you sure, Mr. Hado?" All Might asked.

"Mhm. Either way I'll win. The only way I'd even have a chance at losing is if the both the entire class is attacking me, as well as you. At full strength."

Hearing Akaerue's insane level of confidence, All Might had no choice but to put him on a team alone.
