Capítulo 5: Chapter 4:Twilight Smile

He stared blankly ahead. A brief stream of information about the world appeared clearly before his eyes.

"Hmmm…" He glanced once more at the words floating in the air. The name of the continent, the divided territories, and the system of kingdoms. For some reason, everything felt strangely familiar to him. As if he had once seen or read about this world before. But he was certain, he had never lived here, except for this new life after his death.

He rubbed his forehead, feeling a slight dizziness.

"Why should I bother thinking too hard about this? I have already died once. If I am to live again, it is better to simply enjoy what lies before me."

"Haaa..."

With a long breath, he closed the information. The weariness in his body still lingered, yet it was lighter after eating and resting. Slowly, he pushed himself to stand.

The reflection of his new self still felt foreign. His hair was now a deep green, falling over half his forehead, messy as the wind brushed through it. His skin was paler than before, making his eyes, glowing blue like the night sky, stand out strikingly. His body was no longer as large as it had been in his days as a hero, but instead balanced, lean, and light, suited for swift movements. The simple clothes granted by the system covered his frame. They were not grand or luxurious like in his past life, yet at least neat and clean.

"All right, enough rest. I need to find someone. If I want to debut as a Joker, I need my first audience."

With steady steps, he left the place.

*****

A boy stepped out of a small house on the edge of the city. His face looked worn, with dark circles under his eyes as if he had not slept well. His hair was a dusty brown, messy, sticking slightly from sweat. His cheeks were thin, his body scrawny, the bones of his shoulders visible as he hoisted a small sack of belongings.

He pulled on a worn shirt before greeting his family with a hoarse voice.

"I'll be going…" he said briefly.

His mother only gave a small nod, too busy with household chores. The boy said no more. He was used to it. Their life was far from comfortable, barely scraping by. Yet he still had to head out to work, bringing in what little money he could.

With slouched shoulders, he stepped outside. The day might be the same as every other day. Or perhaps not.

Thak! Thak! Thak!

"Hey, you're late again today!" barked a burly old man with greying hair, wiping sweat from his brow.

The boy scratched his messy, light-brown hair and gave a crooked grin.

"Sorry, uncle… I was helping mother tie up firewood."

The old man snorted, though a faint smile tugged at his lips.

"Hmph. Fine. Hurry up, grab that log. Don't let us do all the work ourselves."

The boy nodded. He walked over to the pile of freshly cut timber. Sawdust clung to his torn shirt as he crouched down. He slid both hands under a log thicker than his own thigh.

Urghhh!

His body trembled, teeth clenched. The heavy log lifted slowly, pressing down on his shoulders, almost toppling him. His thin legs quivered violently, but he bit down on his lip and forced himself forward.

"Hey! Don't you dare drop that! If it cracks, what will you pay with?!" shouted one of the workers tying planks together.

"I… know…!" the boy grunted through his teeth.

Step by step, he carried the weight, breath ragged, sweat dripping from his chin and mixing with the dust underfoot. At the stacking area, he lowered the log with careful strain.

Dhuumm!

The ground shuddered, and a puff of dust rose into the air. He slumped down, wiping sweat from his forehead with his ragged sleeve.

"Hurry up! Still plenty more!"

The boy forced himself up again. Without complaint, he repeated the task. Lift, carry, stack, return. Over and over. His hands blistered, his shoulders burned, but he endured.

As the sun tilted westward, the calls of night birds began to stir. The overseer, arms crossed, finally raised his voice.

"That's enough for today! Stop before night falls!"

A small cheer broke among the workers. Some laughed with relief, others collapsed onto the dirt rubbing their sore backs. The boy let out a long sigh, then picked up a small bundle wrapped in worn cloth. It was his wage for the day, a parcel of food for his family.

"See you tomorrow," he said with a wave.

"Be careful on the way back! Don't take the river path, a big snake was spotted!" one man shouted, chuckling.

"And if you've got leftovers, don't forget to share with me tomorrow!" Another added.

The boy let out a small laugh.

"If my mother allows it, I'll share. But don't expect much, uncle!"

"You cheeky brat! Grow up quickly so I can't scold you anymore!" the old man grumbled playfully, making a few workers burst into laughter.

The boy smiled, waving at them all before turning toward the path home.

The road back was quiet. The dirt path wound between tall trees, shadows slowly devouring the light. He clutched the bundle of food tightly, humming to himself to push away the silence.

Hm~ hm~ hmm… lalala…

His footsteps echoed softly. Until suddenly—

Krekkk!

"Huh…?" He froze. Something crunched beneath his foot. The sound was sharp, metallic, like stepping on an empty can.

He looked down. Beneath his sole lay something strange. A small cylinder, dented at the side, glinting faintly under the moonlight.

"A… can?" he whispered in confusion, crouching to pick it up.

"What is this…? Where did this come from…?"

His eyes widened. He had never seen such a thing in this world. He was certain it hadn't been there when he walked this path moments ago.

His throat went dry, hands trembling.

"Why… does this feel like it shouldn't exist here…?"

He glanced left and right, as if hoping someone else might explain this bizarre discovery. But the road was empty, filled only with the chirping of crickets.

Cold sweat trickled down his temple. His breath grew shallow.

"What's happening…? Why this thing…?"

Cling! Ting ting!

He flinched as the can rolled away, kicked by accident. Its metallic rattle echoed unnaturally in the night silence.

The boy froze, face pale, body rigid with fear. Before he could react, the air around him suddenly began to roar.

Wuuussshhhhh!

The wind surged, tugging at his clothes. The bundle in his hand nearly flew away, but he gripped it desperately.

"W… what is this…?" his voice shook, drenched in panic. He tried to step back, but his legs felt rooted to the ground.

"I… I…"

The wind intensified, whipping his messy hair wildly. His eyes grew wide with terror, and at last he cried out.

"Help! Somebody help me!"

But the scream was cut short. His voice was sucked away, stolen from his throat. His mouth gaped open, but no sound emerged.

His body was dragged toward the unseen vortex. His hair whipped violently, his food bundle slipped from his grasp.

Wooooonggggggg!

In a flash, light swallowed him whole. The can vanished. The boy vanished.

The empty road fell silent once more, the night insects chirping as though nothing had ever happened.
