Kabanata 12: Apples
Apples are delicious. But they're not always a favorite. Carmel apples are also great. Don't you think so? Even if you don't that's alright. Fried apples are also great, in pancakes that is, you don't fry them separately. The size is important though. Too big and they're too crunchy (unless you like them crunchy and then it's not a problem). Too small and you can't even really taste them, and then what was the point of putting the apples in your pancakes to begin with?
We used to put lots of different fruit in our pancakes as kids, just whatever we had on hand. Apples, bananas, probably grapes (I don't remember for sure, but it sounds up our alley of strange), I'm pretty sure pineapples have found their way into our pancakes (knowing us), pumpkin for sure, blueberries on the other hand I don't think have ever made their way in.
Apples are great though (blueberries are also great), Fuji apples are especially great, pretty much the greatest apple ever. They were almost a main staple of life in the first grade. My mom kept buying the giant Fuji apples and they were just too tasty not to eat and they were so big (compared to my tiny first grade self) that I would be full after eating one. Fuji apples are great.
I also really like Granny Smith apples, but those ones are harder to eat plain just because they're so sour. Sometimes you do want a really sour apple, and sometimes you're "Let's put some peanut butter (or caramel if you have it) on here."
Red Delicious, are a whole different story, same with Golden Delicious. Any apple going around claiming that it is delicious, is definitely lying. (Like Greenland, Delicious is a misnomer.) I have heard that freshly picked Delicious apples live up to their name, but all the ones I've tried were not that great. Though maybe it's because none of them were super especially nice apples. Or maybe I'm just biased. I don't know, oh well.
