Chapitre 320: CH88 (318), Global Competition Day One (2)

Our Pokemon materialized on the field, and his choice turned out to be Flapple after all, while mine was Medusa/Gyarados. Flapple's appearance alone would have excited the audience since no matter how pathetic I found it, it was still a dragon type, but the appearance of a second Gyarados-variant made them go wild.

I mean Medusa definitely looked different from a regular Gyarados. The back part of her scales was purple, while her belly part as well as the row of spots on the back were cobalt blue.

Medusa's barbels were a bit shorter than the ones of a regular Gyarados, and while the crest on her head stayed three-pointed, the tips were pointy as well as a bit longer than usual.

The white fins on each side and the ones on her back as well as her tail were light/heather purple. All in all, she screamed I'm different, and the fact that she, at 13 meters, was way above average in length, made her extra exceptional. That may have been the case for all my Gyarados, but that did not take away from the fact that it was unusual.

The crowd's awe aside, Medusa's appearance triggered her Intimidate ability, so Flapple got intimidated, which provoked its dragon pride, making it angry after it overcame the intimidation.

Still, while Flapple was busy with that, Medusa made use of it being grounded and released Poison Gas on the whole field, with Flapple being the main target.

It was too distracted by both the effect of Intimidate and its subsequent anger to escape and got poisoned. That snapped Flapple out of its state, but it was too late and it got hit by Medusa's follow-up Venoshock, which cause some good damage.

Still, it fought through the pain and took off into the air to escape Medusa's offense. That had to be hurting its dragon pride some more, but this time it did not let that distract it.

Flapple tried to bomb her with some Grav Apples, but Medusa either dodged them or intercepted them with Flamethrower. Seeing that his bombs were not working Flapple switched to shooting Dragon Pulse at Medusa from above, but she countered those with Hydro Pump.

Still, after some back and forth Medusa had enough and decided to get serious. Instead of waiting until the poison had knocked out Flapple, she decided to knock it out personally.

She used the ultimate technique of every Gyarados-line member, Splash, and hurled herself in the air. Her Splash brought her over 80 meters up, and she even overtook Flapple during her ascension.

Flapple dodged to the side when Medusa abruptly rose into the air, and when she passed it, it tried to nail her with a Dragon Pulse, but she blocked it with one of her own.

Once Medusa was at the zenith of her rise, somewhere around 100 meters, she released a massive Sludge Wave, that covered a great part of the area below her.

She rode the Sludge Wave on the way down, and thanks to being so high in the air when she released the attack, Flapple had no way to escape the area the wave covered before it got hit, and was dragged down by it as well.

While Flapple crashed onto the ground and got covered/submerged by the Sludge Wave, Medusa rode it till the end and landed back on the ground without suffering any damage.

All my Gyarados had found methods on how to return to the ground unharmed after a Splash, and honestly, that was absolutely not the highest Medusa could reach with Splash.

However, since she only needed to reach that much, she held back while using Splash. Still, Medusa did not plan to wait for Flapple to resurface, so she sent a Venoshock to the place she felt Flapple.

Two seconds later the Sludge Wave had completely spread out, and Flapple's body became visible. It was still conscious and struggling to stand up. It was giving its all and most people felt the need to root for it.

Well, Medusa was not having it, she directly fired a Flamethrower at Flapple, not only burning it but also the sludge on its body, which vaporized and partly entered Flapple's body through its respiratory system.

Not that it would have made much of a difference since the Flamethrower finally proved too much, sending Flapple into unconsciousness. The referee declared Flapple unable to battle and thus Medusa the winner. I was declared the winner after that.

While the referee was doing his declaration, Medusa used Purify to heal Flapple from the poison she inflicted on him. After she had done that, Carlos gave us a grateful nod before recalling Flapple, and I did the same with Medusa after thanking/praising her.

I then thanked Carlos for the fight, before leaving the field. My fight took less than 15 minutes total, so it was only 11 a.m right now. That meant that I now had nearly 5 hours until my personal fight at 3:45 p.m, so I was contemplating how to spend that time.

I left the stadium and checked out the area around it, speaking with some of the pedestrians that were willing to talk. Many of them recognized me and asked me some questions, which I answered as long as they were not too important or personal, while I politely declined to answer the ones that were too personal/important.

I did not forget to ask everyone I talked with about any interesting places or landmarks. I naturally also asked for any good restaurants or stalls since becoming familiar with the local cuisine was very important.

I spent over an hour checking out the area close to the stadium, and I learned quite a bit in that time. I found out where I could find a stall street like the one I had found on Pummelo Island.

I also noted the 5 restaurants that came up the most among the recommendations for personal verification. Then there were a few shops that sold good quality materials and they apparently also received some rare goods on occasion.

Finally, there were another two shops that received a lot of recommendations. These two were selling Pokemon, and according to the locals they were the best stores in the city. Those were all obviously biased views, but there was no harm in looking into it myself, and it was way better than randomly shuffling about the city.

My first stop was one of the two Pokemon stores. I went into the "Izumi's Buddy Store" first, and I ended up being somewhat surprised. First of all, I learned that Starly, as well as Bidoof, were the most common Pokemon around here, and in the Ransei region in general.

So, it was no surprise that they were the most abundant Pokemon available at the store as well. Aside from those two, and some of their evolutions, the store naturally had other species for sale as well.

Among them, the most interesting Pokemon/species they had available were Shinx, Duskull, Snorunt, Aron, Skorupi, and finally Sandile. Unfortunately, their numbers were truly low, and none of them had any noteworthy potential.

This was really regrettable since I would have liked to add any of them into the fold. There were 12 Shinx, with the best one only having Light Green potential, and they were the most abundant among my chosen species.

There were only 2 Duskull, and 4 Aron, but none of them had better than yellow potential. The same was true for the 5 Skorupi and 7 Snorunt. The best of both species had deep yellow potential.

The only one that also managed to make it into the green shade potential-wise was one of the 5 Sandile, who had light green potential. That yield was truly sad in my opinion, and the only ones I seriously considered buying, even if it was because everyone else was worse and I really liked them, were the light green Sandile as well as the light green Shinx.

Nonetheless, I decided to take a look at the other store first before making my decisions, so I left "Izumi's Buddy Store" after thanking the assistant, and made my way to "Spring Water Oasis". Honestly, that sounded more like an onsen than a Pokemon store, but I was not there to judge its name, but the available Pokemon.

They had an abundance of Starly and Bidoof as well, but the Pokemon that aroused my interest were different. The store actually had 3 Litwick, 3 Cubchoo, 8 Blitzle, 11 Croagunk, and unbelievably an Axew as well.

I'll be honest if not for the fact that the Axew had only light Orange potential and a price that was able to kill the last bit of hesitation in me, I would have definitely bought it.

However, its potential was too bad, and unlike Eggy/Salandit, Axew was not a heartfelt gift from my parents. Had it been a pseudo-legendary I would have bought it without any hesitation regardless of its bad potential, but it wasn't, so it did not get afforded the same privileges.

Among the others, only one of the Cubchoo and one of the Croagunk had light green potential. The rest had deep yellow potential at best, which was not good enough. At least it wasn't good enough normally, but the Pokemon with deep yellow potential was one of the Litwick, and I was really tempted to grab it.

Still, I decided to wait another day before doing any purchases. The store clerks in both stores had told me that they were going to receive a new batch tomorrow, and I wanted to see if one or two of the newcomers were better than the ones I saw today.

After I made that decision I paid one of the recommended restaurants a visit since it was already 1 p.m, and it was time for lunch. Well, I learned one thing from that visit and that was that the only Pokemon that could be offered in restaurants were members of the Magikarp, Bidoof, and Starly-line.

Any other used Pokemon had to be wild ones "hunted by coincidence", so they were considered rare dishes that were only occasionally available. I had no idea why Ransei limited the food breeding to those 3 species if they did it for 3 Pokemon species anyway.

Well, they had a lot of cattle, so the people are that for meat mostly. Hmm, maybe it was because they had an (over)abundance of cattle. Anyway, I ate a few tasty steaks before visiting the stall street.

However, because it was already close to 2 p.m by the time I made it there, I only got to check out less than half the stalls before I had to make my way to the venue of my personal fight.

I made it to the "Captain's Gym" with 10 minutes to spare, but chose to wait for them to pass beside the battlefield. I did some stretching exercises during that time, and I saw my opponent arriving as well, 3 minutes before 3:45 p.m.

The staff gave us the signal to step onto the field a minute before the start, and the host began our intros while we made it to our respective starting positions. At exactly 3:45 p.m the referee did his usual thing before he gave the starting signal.

The first one to move was actually Caroline and in a ninja-esque fashion, she created a smokescreen to obscure herself. The only problem was that her cloud had a purple tint, and it was not too hard for me to deduce that her smokescreen was in fact some poison mist.

Since I was not all that eager to inhale any poison, I made my way up using aura platforms. Caroline apparently took exception to that and threw a handful of shuriken at me, that I intercepted with senbons.

It quickly became evident to me that this was going to be another tricky fight like against Yvonne if I did not do something against the poison mist. My best bet was to take Caroline out as swiftly as possible since any delay increased the probability of Caroline successfully poisoning me.
