Chapitre 6: Chapter 6: Choosing Gu and Attempting a Breakthrough

Hello, author here. I hope you all are having a good day :)

I've noticed that I seem to have settled into a natural schedule of uploading one chapter every five days. Do you think I should formalize this as my upload schedule, or should I continue uploading chapters when they are completed, with a general guideline of one chapter per week?

I will consider your suggestions when deciding my course of action, though I reserve the right to disregard them if I determine that I disagree with your conclusions. :)

Shoutout for "Reverend Insanity: Otherworldly Demon Venerable," written by Fotohhatab. Go and read it after you are done with this chapter.

Anyway here are the RI Questions

1. How many ppl awaken with an 1% talent and do they still get accepted into a academy or is there a threshold of like 10% talent to be useful? - Question asked in the chapter-beginning channel in the RI Fanfiction Discord server by Simon.

2. What are your opinions on Ancient Battle Formations?

3. What RI fanfictions are you all reading?

Zhao Wen's POV

Observing the Gu worms before him, Zhao Wen contemplated which of the Gu he should choose as his Vital Gu. This was an extremely important decision he was making, as once he had chosen a vital Gu, it would be hard to change it.

[Hmmm, Phantom Fiend used to have Astral Claws Gu as his Vital Gu, but once he reached rank 4, he used it in his refinement of Phantom Fiend Gu. I have the recipe for Astral Claws, but I shouldn't blindly follow in the footsteps of Phantom Fiend.]

Picking up Phantom Fiend Gu, Zhao Wen contemplated turning it into his Vital Gu before setting it down, thinking:

[While Phantom Fiend Gu certainly is the most powerful of the Gu worms I have, it is also the one with the largest primeval essence expenditure. If I turn it into my Vital Gu, I likely won't be able to use it until I'm at least rank 3 upper stage. I shouldn't turn any of the rank 4 Gu into my Vital Gu as I won't be able to use them for a while.]

Setting aside Phantom Vault and Phantom Fiend Gu, Zhao Wen examined the remaining rank 3 Gu.

[So Turn Phantom Gu, Amplify effect Gu, Condense Phantom Gu, and Phantom Steps Gu are my realistic options.]

Holding the Gu one by one, Zhao Wen observed them as he considered the implications of turning any one of them into his Vital Gu.

[Out of these Gu, three are Phantom Path while one is Rule Path. Amplify effect is one of the best mortal rule path Gu worms. Its effect was to multiply another Gu's power by the rank of the Amplify effect Gu. A rank 3 amplify effect Gu would amplify other Gu by three times. Though there is one major flaw with choosing this Gu as my Vital Gu.

I don't have the recipe for rank 4 and rank 5 Amplify effect Gu; these are usually kept by the super forces. It is already a miracle that Phantom Fiend managed to get his hand on an Amplify effect Gu. If I want to refine the Gu to rank 4 or 5, I will need to beg the super forces for the recipe, something I don't want to do.]

Moving Amplify effect to the side, Zhao Wen was left with the three rank 3 Phantom Path Gu: Turn Phantom, Condense Phantom, and Phantom Steps Gu.

[So it comes down to a contest between Movement, Attack, and Defence. Hmmm, I can rule out Phantom Steps Gu. While it is a decent Movement Type Gu, the only exceptional thing about it is that it is a Phantom Path Gu; the same effect and speed can be achieved with almost any decent rank 3 movement type Gu. Its worth is only increased by the fact that Phantom Fiend left a movement type killer move that uses Phantom Steps as one of its Cores.

Compared to Turn Phantom and Condense Phantom, Phantom steps Gu is simply unappealing as a Vital Gu.]

With Phantom Steps joining the ranks of rejected life partners, Zhao Wen focused on the two final contestants for his heart.

Frowning as he thought, Zhao Wen considered the application of both Gu.

Condense Phantom Gu turned Phantoms real, in essence, it turned False to Real, the immaterial to Material. It was the Core Gu worm of many offensive Phantom Path killer moves including Phantom Fiends signature killer move: Phantom Fiend Regalia.

[If I choose Condense Phantom, I will likely focus more on the offensive aspects of Phantom Path, Turning Phantom Weapons, Creatures, and Terrain real to defeat my opponents. Focusing on the offensive aspect of Phantom Path allowed Phantom Fiend to become one of this century's most feared demonic Gu masters operating within the Fang Clan's territory. Although he did die once he agitated the entire Fei Clan by killing their young clan leader during his wedding.]

Turn Phantom Gu, on the other hand, turned Real to Phantom, turning Real to False, Material to Immaterial. Turn Phantom was the Core Gu worm of many movement and defensive Phantom path Killer moves with Phantom Fiends killer move: Flying Phantom being one. Flying Phantom Used Turn Phantom, Phantom Steps, and Soul Fly Gu.

The Killer move allowed the Gu master to turn into a flying phantom that could move through the air with great speed with intermittent boosts in speed to throw off any pursuit.

[If I choose Turn Phantom Gu, I will most likely focus on defensive and movement type abilities from Phantom Path. Turning myself and others into Phantoms or Turning attacks into Phantoms. Hmmm, I remember that in Reverend Insanity Mo Yao's Will eluded that Phantom Path mainly focuses on evasion and defense on the mortal level.

If I assume this is true, then I would be foolish to Choose Condense Phantom as my Vital Gu. Phantom Fiend was truly revolutionary, moving against the current by focusing on the offensive aspect of Phantom Path.

Sigh, I don't think I can be like him and choose an offensive focus; the original Zhao Wen died during what I am now sure was an assassination attempt. If I want to live, I need good defensive methods, and Turn Phantom is one of the best for the mortal ranks. I want to be able to attack and retreat at will, choosing my battles carefully. For this goal, Turn Phantom Gu is the best choice.]

Resolving himself, Zhao Wen pulled the Gu into his Aperture and started to turn it into his Vital Gu.

---

Having decided on his vital Gu and refined Turn Phantom Gu, Zhao Wen had decided that it was time to redeem the five rank 2 Gu he had been given as compensation from the clan. Leaving his Tortoise house, Zhao Wen joined the ranks of Gu masters moving to and fro along the length of the caravan.

Arriving at the Elder Tortoise house that acted as the Gu cart/treasury, Zhao Wen showed the token to the guards there, and once they had confirmed his identity and the token's validity, one of the guards opened the door set between the Tortoise's back and front legs and led Zhao Wen inside.

Arriving in front of a closed door, the guard turned to Zhao Wen and said:

"Alright, here we are. Now remember that you are only allowed to take 5 Gu from the rank 1 or rank 2 sections. While there is no limit on what Gu you can choose, it is generally frowned upon to choose multiple Gu like liquor worms, relic Gu, or other similar Gu. Alright, I have said enough. Kid, get inside quickly; you have an hour to choose your Gu, so don't spend too much time dilly-dallying."

Nodding to the overly talkative guard, Zhao Wen entered the room containing the Gu worms.

After closing the door behind him, Zhao Wen walked over to a table where an Information Path Gu worm was contained within a formation of some type. He had been told by the guard that this Gu would contain the information about what Gu worms the caravan had in stock and give a short description about the Gu.

Picking up the information path Gu, Zhao Wen sent his primeval essence into the Gu. Once he did this, an immaterial scroll appeared in front of him with a list of the Gu worms and their effects. Focusing on one Gu worm in particular, its information appeared inside his mind.

[Wonderful! This caravan has 3 rank 2 Soul Fly Gu; this is the last Gu I needed to form the Killer move: Flying Phantom. I definitely need to take one of these.]

Checking where the Gu was stored, Zhao Wen started moving there. While he was searching for the exact spot, he was going through the details on Soul Fly Gu.

Soul Fly Gu was a Soul Path Gu which went from rank 2 to rank 5 that allowed the soul of a Gu master to fly freely with increased speed. Souls could already float around without the assistance of Gu, but when Soul Fly Gu was used, the speed of a soul would increase drastically.

Now some may wonder why Soul Fly Gu, together with Turn Phantom and Phantom Steps Gu, could allow a Gu master to fly around freely. Well, this all had to do with how you moved under the effect of Turn Phantom Gu.

During the Late Antiquity era when Phantom Path was being developed, Soul Path was the primary mainstream Gu cultivation path. Coming into being during Spectral Soul Demon Venerable's life, Phantom Path was conceived as a way to defend against the rampant killing and frequent battles that were caused by soul path cultivators' need for souls.

Phantom path methods became important for the times Gu masters, especially Soul Path Gu masters, as it solved one of the weaknesses of Soul Path: the Gu master's body. If a Soul path Gu master had a turn phantom Gu, he could turn his body immaterial and use his Soul path methods without worrying about his enemy targeting his body. Furthermore, it turned out that when a Gu master turned phantom, the Gu master's soul could drag the phantom body around.

This was the reason that Soul Fly Gu could be used to form the killer move: flying phantom. As Soul Fly Gu allowed a Gu master's soul to fly around freely, it could drag the phantom body of the Gu master along with it.

Having found Soul Fly Gu, Zhao Wen returned to the table with the information path Gu and started to browse through the list of Gu, looking for any good additions to his collection.

[Hmmm, I have now secured my defense, movement, and storage. What I now need are Gu that can fulfill my Attacking, Investigating, Healing, and Concealment needs. Preferably, I should choose simple Gu that are easy to raise with easy access to their food in the Clan.

I will already have problems securing the food for my Phantom Path Gu. I do not need more exotic Gu added to my collection.]

As Zhao Wen looked through the catalogue, his attention was drawn to a Soul path Gu named Ghost Eye Gu. Ghost Eye Gu would use the Gu master's Soul foundation to observe the surroundings, picking up any Souls within its investigative area.

Leaning his head on his hands, Zhao Wen contemplated the feasibility of using Ghost Eye Gu. After some time contemplating, he concluded.

[In the absence of Rule or Phantom Path investigative Gu, I think choosing a Soul Path Gu is my best choice. Compared to Wind path, Soul Path has way fewer conflicts with Phantom Path, and considering the alternative is a Wind Path investigative Gu, I think Ghost Eye Gu will be more useful to me.]

Finding the location of Ghost Eye Gu, Zhao Wen walked over to pick it up.

[Hmm, Considering the fact that Phantom Fiend Gu is a Phantom/Soul Path Gu, I am sure there is some overlap between the paths. If I find any good phantom path materials in the future, I might be able to turn these Soul path Gu into phantom path Gu. Then again, I am a mortal without any attainment in any path, so this might only be wishful thinking.]

Returning to the catalogue, Zhao Wen looked through it and slowly chose the remaining three Gu.

-----

One day later

Sitting inside an enclosed Room, a young man could be seen calmly preparing for a breakthrough. Having chosen his 5 rank 2 Gu, Zhao Wen had returned to his Tortoise House to prepare for his breakthrough to rank 3.

In front of him, he had placed his Primeval Elder Gu containing over 68,000 Primeval Stones. He had already taken out 50, placing them within easy reach for when he started his attempt. Making his final checks of his surroundings and his own state, Zhao Wen breathed in and exhaled before he moved his focus and will to the red orb floating within the center of his aperture.

Activating the Red steel relic Gu, Zhao Wen muttered, "here goes nothing."

As the Relic Gu activated, Zhao Wen saw his aperture walls turn into Crystal membrane aperture walls.

Exhaling to try to clear his nervousness, Zhao Wen started to move his primeval essence according to the method described in Phantom Fiends Inheritance. Zhao Wen needed to use his primeval essence to break the crystal membrane and thus increase his cultivation rank from rank 2 peak stage to rank 3 initial stage.

Zhao Wen needed to be careful when mobilizing his primeval essence to assault the walls; if he lost control over the primeval essence, he could cause it to rampage, damaging any Gu worms within his aperture and wasting massive amounts of essence. In the worst-case scenario, he could even damage his aperture's foundation if he failed at a crucial moment.

As Zhao Wen assaulted the walls, time slowly moved by.

1 hour. Everything was going well; the Primeval essence sea waves were striking the walls one by one, slowly increasing in size after each strike against the walls.

3 hours. The first sign that Zhao Wen was having any effect appeared as a crack formed in the crystal membrane wall.

5 hours. It seemed that Zhao Wen was approaching the halfway mark, with the waves having become strong enough to produce visible effects each time they struck the walls.

5 hours 26 minutes. As Zhao Wen was controlling the waves, he made a mistake and caused most of his progress in making the primeval essence waves to collapse. This caused the cracks on the crystal wall to slowly start to close.

6 hours 54 minutes. Due to his exhaustion and haste in attempting to increase the size of the Primeval essence waves, Zhao Wen lost control over the primeval essence.

Desperately attempting to halt the imminent catastrophe, Zhao Wen tried to calm the primeval essence.

[darn it, I shouldn't have continued with this attempt after I caused the continuous wave method to collapse.]

Coughing up some blood, Zhao Wen waited for his primeval essence sea to calm itself before he used his new healing Gu to heal the damage his failed breakthrough attempt had caused.

Sighing to himself, he thought,

[This seemed so easy for Fang Yuan to accomplish, but now that I have experienced trying to break through myself, I am only filled with more admiration for Fang Yuan. Truly I cannot compare myself with a regressed Future Venerable.]
