章 21: Nick's Past (Part 1)
I knocked on the door of our bedroom.
I could hear Becca from the other side of the door.
"Who is it?"
"It's me, Becca. Can I come in?"
"Yes?"
I walked in with the food. Becca was still laying in bed. Before I could explain my surprise, Becca let me know,
"You don't have to knock, this is your room too."
"Well, you might have not been decent at the moment. Even though we share a room, I want to let you have your privacy."
Becca waved her hand. "Don't worry about it. If I am going to be indecent, I will lock the door first."
I was a little reluctant, but if that was what Becca wanted.
"Ok…if you say so…"
"You don't have to walk on egg shells around me, for at least the next 6 months, we are a couple."
This statement got my blood pumping. Becca was accepting our relationship. It gave me more motivation to try my best as her lover for the next 6 months.
I put the tray down on the table and walked over to Becca.
"Since we are a couple now, I went out early and personally made you breakfast like I promised before. Please come have some."
I held my hand out to Becca.
Becca was surprised that I would go that far.
"Nick! You should just rest. You don't have to put in all that extra work for me…"
I grabbed her hand and gently helped her up from the bed.
"It's not too much extra work. I naturally wake up earlier than you and the pancakes that I prepared are something I made most mornings in my original world. It's not hard to add an extra serving for someone.
Plus, I want to spoil you a little. That way you can get accustomed to the way I like to treat my romantic partner…in my world, you would be considered my girlfriend right now until we redo the marriage ceremony."
It seemed the Becca enjoyed my sentiment, but then she threw me a curveball.
"It seems like you know your way around a romantic relationship…have you had a so called girlfriend before?"
I was left speechless for a moment. I did not want to offend Becca with the dating standards of my world, but I decided it was best to be truthful.
I tried to speak clear and calmly to show I had nothing to be guilty of.
"Yes Becca, I've had 5 official girlfriends in the past. It is important for you to understand the way my world viewed dating, so let me explain.
Having a girlfriend and dating them is not the same as an engagement. If two people liked each other, they would date and see where things lead them as they got to know each other more.
They might like each other so much that they later get engaged and married. Or they can realize that they are not suited for each other and break up.
Dating is more a getting to know each other phase. Kind of like courting in your world. Lot of boyfriends and girlfriends will break up before they find the right one to settle down with and marry."
Becca's eyes started twitching during my explanation. Then she shouted,
"So you will abandon me the moment I am not good enough for you?! Once a couple starts courtship, they always get married unless something serious changes the plans.
I thought you said yesterday that we are going to be partners and fight against this world together! Is that only true as long as I keep meeting your standards?"
Becca's eyes were starting to water. I tried my best to calm her down. One of my hands was still holding Becca's hand, I reached my other hand across her back and put it on her shoulder.
"No Becca, I will not abandon you. The logic in my world is that it's important for people to be happy in their relationship. If people in a relationship are unhappy, then they should first work hard with their partner to fix the problem.
However, if nothing can fix the issue, then the relationship should end instead of staying in a relationship that makes them miserable.
Please don't worry too much. Because I have some experience with relationships in the past, it has helped me understand myself and what I want and need in a relationship to be happy. That is the reason why people in my world have multiple relationships in their lives.
To slowly find out what they want in their ideal relationship, so they can pick a partner they can have a happy marriage with.
From what I have seen so far of your personality, I think that you are close to my ideal woman. Of course there will be things we don't see eye to eye on and things about you that I may dislike slightly, but it is also important in a relationship to find the person that you can truly love even when knowing all their flaws.
Since you don't have much experience, you should take your time to experience what a relationship with me would be like and decide for yourself if it makes you happy enough to get married for the rest of our lives. If after 6 months, you feel unhappy and want to break up, then I will understand that we are just not compatible for each other and there won't be any hard feelings.
I will still help you life a comfortable life without me. In most of the 5 relationships I have been in, we ended up breaking up because one of us ended up unhappy in the relationship. It happens all the time and it is not an indictment that someone is not good enough. It just means they weren't right for each other."
"I can kind of understand the logic, but 5 girlfriends? You are almost as bad a man from this Kingdom!"
"No no no! I had these 5 girlfriends all spread out over 10 years. I never was with more than one girl at a time and I treated them all well to the best of my ability. Please don't worry about them. I have no lingering feels for any of them."
Becca eyed me suspiciously, "did you ever make pancakes for any of them?"
'Crap'
"Umm….yes I did. I had one girlfriend during school that lived with me and I would make breakfast for us."
Becca's eyes were about to pop out.
"Are you not a virgin?!"
I was starting to sweat. "No Becca, I am not a virgin…"
Becca was getting furious. "You slept with someone and didn't marry them? You are just like Nicolas! Stop trying to act like you are different!"
