Faye observed the hand signals and exchanges between Sterling and his men. She understood the importance of staying quiet and refraining from asking about their meaning.

Any inquiry might endanger them, especially with the royal knights standing all around them.

As they readied to depart the scaffolds, Sterling turned to take Faye's hand, but he saw the wary look in her eyes as she stepped back away from him.

She, too, had also thought about taking Sterling's hand, but withdrew it hastily.

Thinking better of touching him with the intense energy flowing through her, scared she would hurt him if their flesh made contact. 

"What? What is it?" The Duke's forehead puckered as he stared at her, bothered that she would not accept his hand.

"Is there something wrong?" he asked.
