Still makes more sense than gender studies. Have to agree about money though. It's not like a foreign country can ascertain the source of his 'earnings', especially considering the overall chaotic situation within his homeland. View More

ImmortalMaou_sama: Well, the reason they gave was novel portrays bad practices, evil Mc etc. I believe its because this novel is too realistic. China's CCP, the Ruling party is exactly like many of the "Righteous" Sect is this novel.

DaoistCitizen: A couple hundred times in thousands of books the author claims their mc is ruthless.

They spend their days strutting abt with their dong hanging out, raping, slaughtering thousands comedically and escaping as the seniors come or plot armor pulls them through.

This is legitimately the first time ever well developed female characters who are both beauties fight against an mc WHOS STRONGER THAN THEM instead of being hunted by two evil bitches, and the mc goes dragon and tear them literally apart. Much more effectively and truely ruthless. Doesbt matter if mc kills billions because those billions are just fictional numerous digits, mc actually tearing apart desperate well developed not actually evil beauties is the first time i legitimately felt 'damn, that's ruthless' instead of rolling my eyes at the comedically overdone army wipe dick schlongs of the popular novels.

iWizard: What? No crowd reactions this time? Well, I guess the author is trying to use it 'sparingly' until they reach appraiser's pavilion. What would it be? Place your bets now: 1) vomiting blood, 2) pulling out hair 3) acting shamelessly like a puppy 4) fainting on the spot 5) smashing one's head into a wall or 6) going completely insane. Maybe there would even be a new type of reaction like commuting suicide from shock, etc.

Too lazy world setting and characters.
No-where near TKA, Reincarnated Thief, Zhang Long etc.
Translation is fine tho.

Dethati: This is a VRMMORPG story that is dragged down by the unimaginative and blatant copying of Warcraft lore. The story has ripped out (Illidan, Elune, Malfurion, Aegwynn, Medivh, Cenarius, Ashenvale and more) so many pieces of Warcraft lore that the story comes across as a VRMMO fanfic rather than an actual novel. Characters seem 2 dimensional with little growth or change as of chapter 167. As much as I enjoy this story the blatant copying and misinterpretation of the lore which it is copying distracts from most of the enjoyment I get out of this novel. The world building credit shouldn't go to the author for he never built the world he just stole Warcraft's.

Zeph: I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of positive reviews for this novel. The entire story so far has been almost entirely a copy + paste of the popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft. If this isn't blatant copyright infringement, I don't know what is.
In addition, even if the reader has no clue what World of Warcraft is, no less the lore of the game, the way that the story is presented in this novel is horrible. Random names and events are given throughout the novel, and they are in no way actually explained, leaving the reader clueless as to what they are actually reading.
I've read through the reviews here, and one guy even said that the world building was amazing. What? There is literally no world building at all. It's as if the author just took events and character names from World of Warcraft and inserted them randomly into their novel.
All in all, this novel shows a complete lack of imagination from the author.

This was a rather unique reading experience when it comes to Chinese web novels. The Way of Choices seems to capture that, web novel-wise, uncommon feeling of subtlety and grandness. It's kind of hard to put into words, because this “feeling” seems to be an integral part of character design and even the very description of this novel's world setting seems to be permeated by an intangible feeling of vagueness.

When I first started reading this, I inevitably ended up wondering why does this feel so refreshing and, dare I say, somewhat new. The answer came around when I was 400 chapters in. It was, first and foremost, the writing style or maybe it could also be attributed to the quality of translation. It is very unusual for a web novel author to keep the pace of a narrative stable. Mainly due to a constant pressure of being forced to churn out multiple chapters per week. That's why I surmise that Mao Ni shifu wasn't writing it on the go.

The story development feels unhurried and even somewhat lethargic at the start. This may scare off some less patient readers, but for me this was a rather welcome novelty. The author isn't galloping through the plot to get to the action packed tidbits and there are no redundant characters. Most, if not all, secondary characters are fleshed out and distinct. Mao Ni seems to mostly adhere to the famous Chekhov's gun principle: "Remove everything that has no relevance to the story. If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off. If it's not going to be fired, it shouldn't be hanging there." That proverbial rifle does indeed go off. The plot remains very consistent and inconsequential details are rather scarce. Of course, the validity of this observation depends on how deep one is willing to interpret.

The main character deserves his own paragraph. Chen Changsheng feels like an old man trapped in a youthful body. The author emphasises his candour and naivete, but at the same time also mentions that naivete can be cruel. Chen Changsheng has an otherworldly feeling to him and mostly retains his untainted image throughout the novel. It is also very unusual for the main character of xianxia to not be a power fantasy vessel. That's why secondary characters feel so important. The main character doesn't act alone and his friends do play a major role in his achievements. Chen Changsheng relies on different people to accomplish things, that's why plot development doesn't feel like the usual deus-ex escapade, especially when compared to a lower quality xianxia novels.

I also want to mention the dialogues and they are everything but straightforward. Nothing, I repeat, nothing definitive escapes the lips of most, if not all, secondary characters. They speak in riddles and metaphors. Let me quote directly from the novel: “Silence is also a sort of stance”. Much to my amusement, literally “everything” is a sort of stance in this novel. The narrative is filled with implicit messages and deliberately vague undertones. More often than not, characters express themselves non-verbally and Mao Ni does a good job at conveying the ambience of a non-verbal conversation between characters. This creates the aforementioned feeling of vagueness and ambiguity which is more common in drama. The only thing that I found unsatisfactory is the ending. It felt like the author was about to bring this to a definitive conclusion, but then, all of a sudden, changed his decision and wrote chapter 1186, which feels like an unnecessary information dump created only to serve as a future foundation for a sequel. Up until chapter 1186 the novel felt beautifully vague, never slipping into a pit of explicit fact dropping, but then... Oh well, nothing is truly perfect.

In conclusion, The Way of Choices is a great novel. It's very deep and sometimes feels more like a theatrical performance than a web novel. If you want to take a break from unsophisticated power fantasy xianxias, this novel is for you. View More

Imanhuwel: Did you now that Reverend Insanity novel is in hiatus/banned status in China at 2300+ chapters?

NealNOR: I believe being 1st place has put a rush to the story and it is degrading it's quality. The story has become very repetitive and some potential plot has been turned into filler (Yurial's death and boot camp for example). The author (Legion) needs to take a break, brainstorm the story and get back to writing good quality like he used to, or else he won't remain in first place for much longer and then it's all downhill from there. IMO slow down and reevaluate the story and the path it is heading down.

iWizard: Wasn't really a censorship, this event wasn't important enough to be described in detail. Why should we care about some tertiary characters who appeared literally for one chapter? And it's not like killing those nobodies had any significance for the development of the MC - we already know he's ruthless. Would you like to read about every insignificant character killed by the MC in detail? In my opinion it would trivialize the novel and put too much emphasis on violence and killing, which are actually an everyday occurrence in this setting and shouldn't be something extraordinary.

iWizard: Well, fck me sideways... This novel can be borderline genius in one chapter and then suddenly become borderline cheesy and trashy in the other one. Like come on, I had a hard time imagining a big golden monkey swinging a 1000m long stick around without chuckling. What's next? Will the big eye turn into Godzilla? Will they topple some skyscrapers? Is this a parody?

iWizard: I seriously can't stop myself from commenting about how shallow this novel feels. I can't exactly point out the source of this, but the most probable cause of this feeling are completely generic and forgettable secondary characters. Some of them are not even given a proper name (Wilson's wife). I just tried asking myself if there were any impactful or memorable secondary characters so far and came out with nothing. Static cardboard cutouts: cute little tsundere sister; straightforward and strict, but at the same time an incredibly stereotypical father figure; token waifu, who's very beautiful and will probably get kidnapped/threatened due to her beauty... Not a single thought through secondary character. Even wizard Jason was much more relatable as a small-time antagonist. Even right now the author keeps introducing more NPC's, I hope we can finally get someone interesting in this arc, otherwise it will be a typical case of 'muh MC has 400 IQ' type of novel, where everyone else is mentally & emotionally retarded.

iWizard: Oh here we go, another progressive NPC from Twitter complaining about various 'phobias' and 'bigotry'. We are not in Orwell's 1984 yet, so you can 'translate yourself out' back to Twitter. These social terrorists will never cease their attempts at censorship. It is a work of fiction, nobody cares if your 'fee-fees' were hurt. If you don't like it - don't read it. You being offended doesn't warrant censorship, grow up already.

iWizard: We may as well prematurely offer our thoughts and prayers to those 'temporary' boyfriends introduced so far. My bet would be - everyone dies in an unsightly fashion: either by being devoured by thousands of gigantic insects or stomped into minced meat by a descending god, or hypnotized and then promptly sacrificed to some foreign entity.

Let's count 'em waifus: there are 2 Chinese chicks from Stanford, the secretary, his so-called senior sister from the Gate, his step-sister, his childhood friend from the village, Sheila, Trish, Tina... Am I forgetting someone? Maybe his older step-sister and her friend too?
