This measure is for those under Rank 1, so between 10 and 16. There is an age mixed group on the three grades of classes under Rank 1 for those being slower, so it is the same rules for all under Rank 1.

However, as the previous classes focused mainly on melee battle, that would lead to too much physical contact, so they had classes in a separate area to avoid some guys taking advantage of them when battling.

Nothing happens just because there is some one-sided infatuation, and no romance develops here because of this. You can see infatuation in children at that age even on children series like Digimon or even on younger children on Detective Conan, which doesn't mean the story would develop into a romance between these characters. Moreover, irl that is normal too, just that the attraction is different than for an adolescent or a grown up, and for some reason, a lot of people seem to be misunderstanding this part of the novel with thinking that the attraction would lead to a serious relationship with romance, which obviously won't happen between children of their age. Showing liking for Yale is natural in Aizu's circumstances, what would be unnatural would be turning this into a serious relationship at their age, especially given that Yale isn't interested in that topic beyond books.
