Even if you are infringing someone else's copyright or even if you are unlawfully translating someone else's work, your work will itself qualify for protection as an original copyright.
As a translator you have created something original. As long as you have not copied someone else's translation and providing you have not pledged your right to someone else, you still own the copyright.
Who owns the translation?
The author owns the translation. As a freelance translator, you as the author own the translation. However if you are an employee or a salaried worker, your employer is the owner of your translation. Authorship does not necessarily mean ownership in copyright terms. Under American law you can sign away your author's rights.'Taming Master
akaDEA: Again, a TRANSLATION is owned by the translator regardless of who owns the rights to the ORIGINAL work. It takes no less work to translate and adapt a novel to another language than to write a novel in the first place. It doesn't require the same type of work (less imagination and creative spark needed, more brute effort) but still the result is a derivative work that has it's own copyright. Yeah there are restrictions on what the translator can do with his work (at least on a public setting) but nevertheless QI doesn't have any rights to the translation, so taking it and posting it on their site without the translator's approval is STEALING. They can pressure the translator to not publish their translation in a public forum but that's it. Doing anything else is not legal.

Multipartite: I became dumbfounded when reading this, amazed at his loophole-exploitation-style combo resolution, and regretful that I didn't see it sooner--very similar to his solution of refining Fixed Immortal Travel Gu before!
He's not going to use the Cicada, else he would have done so instead of resisting the temptation and telling Mo Yao (he's trying to provoke/trap her). The context has been seeded as early as the Gu Yue ancestor context: Wisdom Gu can give pretty much unlimited insight and problem-resolution, of the level of the luck path inheritance, but it consumes your lifespan until you die! But becoming an undead like this is a way to sacrifice your essence-regeneration in order to stop having 'life' and being affected by a decreasing lifespan! By letting himself become a zombie like this without using the Cicada, he's letting himself exploit or even claim the wisdom path Gu inheritance--which, note, Giant Sun's will really wants to protect--to its fullest extent!
