Honestly, it isn’t that bad except for those who are made an example. Plus the fact that their self confidence is going to be attacked from the power difference of MC and his mercenaries. But considering that they get to go on “parole” it isn’t a bad deal View More

Well the sanctuary already has his name and I doubt MC will change the planet name (too difficult to change the culture of it). Not to mention that his confidence in himself is so big that he doesn’t require such things to affirm his awesomeness. View More

dorspking: what a great time to just own an entire planet. i think this planet will now be called planet black, RIP.

Coincidence I believe. After all, patrons will have their own preferences for their chosen and “glasses suitcase guy” seemed preferential to Vic (he was mostly addressing Vic and Vasily wasn’t the favored to win). On the other hand, “Abaddon” (old-fashioned jacket guy) as a deceiver would certainly prefer MC who instinctively lies if suddenly asked a question.
Abaddon did also say that he isn’t much liked by “his colleagues” though he “doesn’t know why.” So it isn’t weird for it to be a coincidence that Vasily was involved and Abaddon didn’t know at all (and if Abaddon did somehow know, likely with spying or something since he doesn’t really have much in the way of friends, then it is fine as Vasily wasn’t chosen by glasses and he could do better with Abaddon; a failure by one judgement standard could be a genius by another like an elephant failing to climb a tree but succeeding to trample a small animal). HalonFox1: Nice conjecture and observations definitely gave a memory feel and but that does beg the question why would 2 god like beings play with vasily

Bibliophileaddict: Or MC was beaten near death and Vic came here but MC’s mind was messed with to think otherwise. In any case, if that is a memory, no way MC actually was able to turn it around considering he blacked out. After all, does it really matter whether you kill someone if you have the resolve to do so?

We don’t know for sure whether the people left behind really die or not. After all, only the “winner” goes to a new world and the rest are “dead” but we don’t know for sure. After all, they are god-like beings so who is to say it isn’t all in the “participants” minds and the “losers” only have their memories altered while the “winner” is cut off from Earth and into the new one.

In any case, I don’t believe that guy was “Abaddon” as I don’t think Abaddon had glasses (not to mention that Abaddon’s challenge was “the first person out survives in a group scenario where mental warfare is an option” and here with only two people it is practically inevitable that it is a fight especially since Vic wants out). Not to mention that I doubt a patron would bother themselves with a previously failed participant. But I do think it is more likely to be a memory than a dream.

If he had to kill himself over it, sure. But it is really only a slight effort to MC: just reciting some fire 🔥 stuff from a science book or whatever. Not to mention he got clothes from her and she could fill him in on the local area and society. So considering there is no life risk it isn’t bad to casually help someone View More

DoGe: Isn’t the reason he died because he helped some random woman. Why on earth would he help another stranger and give them knowledge for nothing? Honestly “nice” mcs can be the worst.

The “effort value points” from “direct patron influence” are quite a boon but annoying that one has to keep ditching their level every time your mark will increase (but it’s worth it as it will make you stronger and getting the levels back is just time). View More

AzureWolf: Thank you for the chapters! This story is one of my favorites. Really looking towards how his followers will grow.

I figured that even when you get above level 5 (the cut off line of “independence” and basically when your patron can overtly influence you), you will unconsciously be influenced by your patron. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the level of your mark (everyone seems to have a mark and such like how MC started out with deception and raised it with lies) determines it. Point is there is a “bleed” effect (like water colors on a canvas mixing) between patron and protégée (couldn’t think of a better term), should be one way as the patron is superior and doesn’t really get power like levels and marks (or it is so small an influence on a patron it is negligible and this could tie into the strength of a faction and how many they can support).

MCs effect is he is showing more and more signs of a pathological liar 🤥 (lying even when he doesn’t need too and him thinking “what is up with me today like hiding the obvious?” is a sign). The “bleed” effect could be considered a good thing as it can help one blend into their faction and master their abilities (MC lying and how good they are has a direct impact on his deception’s advancement) but the obvious downside is it changes your personality and way of thought in a way (for good or worse, point is that it is an external influence changing you, unconsciously or not; perhaps that might be part of the reason a Reaper may lack a patron, from them killing them, as they didn’t want to be under anyone). Plus it could shoot yourself in the foot like MC not keeping track of his lies, telling a bad one and such.

Lying is like being in a one person play 24/7 while walking a tightrope View More

HalonFox1: This story is awesome love the power system and well thoughtout world mechanics

It seems to me that your “heavenly patron” has a “bleed” affect (like water colors mixing on a canvas) for everyone, some more than others and the specific effects differ depending on the faction and patron.

Chaos is full of head strong loot happy murder machine monsters.
Abyss is a dubious strict hierarchical society where you are on top or bottom with the respective patrons being at the top (or maybe the Abyss itself is the top but it is some instinctive force and the patrons represent it?).
Darkness is probably evil and full of plots (everything and everyone plots but they probably do it more and are good speakers).
Light likely increases goodwill or religious to their patron?

Point is the stronger you get the more influence you will get from your patron. The good thing about being in a relatively weaker faction is that I believe the bleed effect should be more subtle, mild and less pervasive though the trade off is powers are harder to get and less plentiful (at least lacking obvious wow factor like the big three).
But it isn’t 0 and I believe that MC is be affected by “Abaddon” by becoming more sketchy and a pathological liar: granted, I find this trait to be more benign compared the the effects of the big three and even helpful as it will make lying come more naturally and less likely to trust (less sudden backstab if you didn’t trust in the first place) but it also makes you susceptible to being a loner without reliable friends or even allies as the lies build a wall that can come crashing down if the wrong lie is said or you are exposed. It is essentially being a one man actor in a play 24/7 while walking on a tightrope. But if such a state feels natural and effortless, then MC is golden and there should be few who could mess with him (though he should still be mindful of this bleed thing and master it lest it masters him). He doesn’t treat things as a “game” at all and treats it as life. He is uncertain about why he is here and why the players are able to be here but he still treats it seriously and not separating himself with things like “they are just NPCs” and the like.
Changing the story does make his foreknowledge weaker but he isn’t so inflexible that he won’t change anything (especially since not changing things you can predict doesn’t make sense and he will being having larger impacts the stronger he is).
In any case, he is doing well and handling things fairly well View More
