ResidentialPsycho: The translation is very confusing at times and often uses words that have completely different meanings from what is intended. For example, not a single worm has appeared twenty chapters into the series. Instead, there have only been things like lizards, snakes, and centipedes, which are definitely not considered "worms" in English. One reader commented that the translation is supposed to be something like Gu, which is prominent in Asian horror novels involving evil magic creepy-crawlies and would make more sense than "worm." Another confusing detail is when a broken limb gets mixed up with an flesh wound or an amputation. A broken arm is much less of a problem than an amputated one, and these are two very different meanings in English. That said, it is possible to figure out what the translation was probably supposed to say.

When I first voted for this novel, I expected to see an MC who died with worms crawling over his body before he revives as an undead lich or something. Thus far, there are no worms, and the MC is very much alive. I assume the "worm" part of the title is a translation error, but I don't know if the "lich" part of the title means that the MC will die and come back as a lich later on or if this is also a translation error.

The story development is confusing, which doesn't help the odd translations. It picks up after the first ten or so chapters. The logic is skewed all over the place as far as characters and development go, but part of that could be a cultural thing.

The culture is very interesting to read about and is the main reason I am still reading this series so far. I'm not sure how long it will keep my attention, but the distinct culture described in this series is the only reason I've read so many chapters.

The MC isn't likeable so far and hasn't shown much depth. He has shown some development, so hopefully that will continue to be interesting. A cop has played a prominent role so far, but he is basing his judgement of guilt or innocence purely on his gut instinct and not evidence. There are cases I've read about where an officer has forged evidence because he "knew" the suspects were guilty, but they were proven innocent later. Naturally, the officer in question went to prison. The cop in this story is like that, and he's incredibly annoying and sullying the name of investigation. Then again, this is China, so I'm not sure if they prefer following feeling over reason as part of their legal system, unlike the one in my country. Otherwise, none of the side characters have been particularly likeable or worthy of attention.

Although the cultural details are interesting, there isn't much information about the world background itself. The storytelling is messy at best, and there's no clear summary regarding "wizards," who are more like evil sorcerers or witches in this setting. I'm not sure if any clarification will be added later. So far, there has only been a detail dropped in once every several chapters, so the system of magic or voodoo or using familiars or whatever exactly is supposed to be going on here doesn't leave any basis for the reader to understand it.

Wolfick: The novels title is 巨虫尸巫 (巨 huge/great 虫 insect/bug [this covers all kinds of insects, but it is not Gu, which is 蛊] 尸 corpse 巫 witch/wizard/shaman)

尸巫 can be interpreted as lich or corpse witch depending on her context, but going on the synopsis of the novel I would probably say the title should be "The Great Tribal Shaman" or something. 虫尸巫 should be what he is, which gives me the impression of one of those tribal shamans who use insects in rituals for "Magic" and stuff.

It wouldn't be the first title which was messed up, I've seen some titles that have absolutely nothing to do with their Chinese meaning, I think it was "The Legendary Swordsman" or something that was the worst for it.

ResidentialPsycho: Toads, lizards, and snakes aren't bugs or insects either... Although one chapter actually does refer to a toad as an insect, which definitely gave me pause. I kinda suspect this word just doesn't translate well into English. It appears to cover amphibians, reptiles, and insect. I wouldn't be surprised if it covers arachnids, too. No worms have appeared in this story thus far, though.

Shaman makes much more sense than lich. So far, there are no undead and not even a hint of necromancy.

Wolfick: Indeed, they are not. They are spelt differently as well. The characters for them are related to insects or bugs (I'm no expert in Chinese, but I know how to use a dictionary and have a rudimentary understanding) where 蛤 would be a toad and 蛇 is a snake. 蜘蛛 Is a spider. Some things can be author being vague and something only a Chinese fluent person would be able to understand, but everything beyond that falls on the translator.

Chinese is a fantastic language where interpretation is very important. 虫 By itself is reference to a lower form of animal life, but is usually interpreted to as insect or bug. When translating, sometimes you need to look at things through the concept rather than an A=B translation, which is poor quality work. This is what is most likely causing you confusion when reading, and is the translators fault, not so much things that don't translate very well. (It's mainly idioms and other culture specific things that don't translate well)

I suspect the translator is just very poor on understanding context and interpretation. They should realise a toad is not an insect and look back over it. Sadly, QI favours quantity over quality, which I don't mind most of the time, but a certain base line of quality should be insured at the very least

Wolfick: But yes, Shaman or witch doctor or something sounds like it would be far more appropriate
