agwed: One thing I’m grateful to this novel for is its portrayal of women. So many novels have female leads who may have had a ****ty past but are now as strong as ever. They can get revenge on their own, and the man is the reward at the end of the journey. They don’t need help at all. This is how new age feminists are portrayed: strong, masculine, independent. There’s a rise in the notion that women today must be strong, be the loudest voice in the room, be always in control. I agree that women have been oppressed in the past and unable to have these powerful qualities, but I don’t want women to feel that they MUST act like that just to be heard and respected. I hope that females can feel comfortable being themselves, whether that is being a forceful, strong, independent CEO, or a someone that depends on another person. I’m glad that this female protagonist with both qualities. She can be strong, but she can also be vulnerable — just like people irl. I don’t believe people must be strong and independent in every aspect to be respected, nor must they be docile and subservient like the past images of “beauty”. Putting pressure on people to always be strong can be very tiring. I think the author does well to show these qualities in Xiaye. Side note: props to the male lead, Mu Yuchen, for embodying “feminine” qualities of empathy and feelings (shocker right!). Thanks to the translator for these beautiful words.
