If it is the former, then the title of the novel is really misleading and should be changed, lol. If you don't want them together then why making them no-blood-related?

When your body interacts with the outside world through your senses it of course makes your body produce hormones which in turn influence your neuromediators inside the brain - and thise influence perceived as emotions. After reading my post a part of your brain was triggered and your body produced cortisol because you considered it as an attack at your social status and you are programmed to defend it because we evolved this way. Even your current behavior is completely automatic and the result of physical processes inside your brain. As I said, the brain is hardware while the personality is software. I hope you at least understand this analogy.

I can only facepalm at your idiocy here. When you see your loved ones die it makes your body produce cortisol and affects your whole nervous system. There is nothing "not bound to physical" in our world, at least it wasn't found so far. Getting feedback from the outside world obviously affects you on the physical level.
