This is kinda reasonable. Itachi gave him a massive mental scar for killing intent, in the original series you see him freeze up several times because of this. Canon Gara couldn't use a technique like that at this stage because he couldn't concentrate, even if he did have psyco levels of killing intent.

I believe the potters had James in their late 40's - early 50's and they were above 70 at the time of their death. They died of dragonpox suspiciously(imo) after their son married a muggleborn and before Harry was born. It wouldn't be surprising that the dark side was more subtle in the deaths of the pure blood house heads. The much younger Evans grandparents also ended up dead before lily and james. They had "normal Muggle deaths" before the age of 50, suspicious. Maybe it was a car crash and petunia used it for lily and james too.
