Moments

His Basilisk's Breath might have been able to manage it, given the context of the Champions' appearance. As always, his plans are ultra-detailed, so he could have had a niche in the throne prepared as he tossed the bodies to form it. View More

Dextuary: No! He probably used a flash bang kind of trinket then hid in the pile of bodies. He even made it look like the teleportation trinket haaha 🤣. (this is my speculation)

You are ignoring the multivalence of the word pride, which I have already explained. Also, please don't call me friend. View More

ArcaALucifer: Arrogance isn't excessive pride. Again, your mistaking the two. Pride is born from gratitude, gratitude of one's self and ones interconnection with life, thus in gratitude of family. In gratitude, taking pride, thus the knowing and understanding that One's Self is LOVE, and therefore isn't less than but rather IS, meaning to LOVE, to Live, to BE! Arrogance is the ignorant attempting to simulate pride without comprehending, as a way to mask the profound feelings and deep-rooted belief that One's Self is less than, thus unloved, unworthy, and inferior. This, follows by One's futile attempt to hide one's self don't and self loathing, in turn lashing out at others and treating others as said individual feels self to be, less than / inferior. Thus, arrogance. Again, nothing to do with each other. You are mistaken yet again friend.

That's right. A pride is a group of lions. My bad. Pride and arrogance are not related at all.
Arrogance, conceit, hubris... these all are vices of excessive pride, which itself can be used to denote the vice as well as the virtue. Context clues should tell you that I used it to indicate the vice. If you are going to correct someone, at least do it properly. View More

ArcaALucifer: arrogance not pride, mean completely different things. So many here always confuse the two.

"The only thing that could result in his downfall…was if he got cocky. And from everything that Daneel had learned, he was sure that he wouldn't be a victim of that simple, yet powerful flaw" ... yeah, that's definitely the attitude to defeat pride... View More

If they thought the world was flat at the end of the 15th century, they would never have sent Columbus west to get to India... Thank you for your great kindness in stooping to my apparently low intelligence with your high-and-mighty-ness. If you wish to cut off a conversation, try to be more polite; or better yet, don't respond to my comments in the first place. View More

catch1: That fact that you think it's fiction says a lot. Ancient Greeks, lol no need to go back that far try during Christopher Columbus's era. If you followed the conversation the mention of Jesus was clearly about his death and its cause. No need to respond you already proved that this is a pointless endeavor.

When was this fictitious time when the predominant thought was that the world was flat? The ancient Greeks closely approximated the Earth's circumference (the source of the determination of the meter lies therein) and the medieval thinkers were far from ignorant about these matters.
Why are you bringing up Jesus? View More

catch1: If one were to gain access to his memory unfiltered in extreme clarity with the ability to pull from it at will you'd be surprised at the rationale that person would come in to. We remember things in a way that makes us the protagonist or the victim or that highlight the things we accept as truths. We ridicule people who think the earth is flat yet, in the past it was the opposite. If we could see the information that we have stockpiled and organize it to enhance our understanding than all of our beliefs would be challenged. His rationale is correct for someone who experienced an impossible thing and was then thrown into an impossible predicament. Adapt or die. Without sufficient strength beliefs just get you killed. Ask Jesus😁

That's a quite radical skepticism. Do you really think that having a realistic grasp of man's epistemological limitations demands that we admit to being systematically fooled by our experience? I'm by no means an advocate of some sort of rationalistic epistemological maximalism, but that itself would be quite the caricature of what non-skeptics propose. What is the source/cause of this radical divide you are proposing between reality and experience? View More

catch1: Reason and reality are perspective and liable to flaws, objective norms as well. We base good and evil on our current beliefs and level of understanding towards our view of reality which is more often than not skewed. While I BELIEVE that our reality is how we see I know that it is only true up to a certain point. All the things our senses perceive are limited to the spectrum from which they operate. Feelings are constantly proven as insufficient and grossly inadequate. Science comes the closest to real and even they are lost. So, what one chooses to believe could be right but, whose to say and based off what?

I am curious what you mean by man-made. Do you mean that they fabricated without reference to reason and/or reality, or do you mean that prudence particularizes objective moral norms to situations that generic laws cannot account for? If it is the former, would not that beg the question as to why "rate of survival" holds some sort of primacy? Unless you think it is self-evident, which I would question. View More

catch1: Right and wrong are man made structures designed to increase the rate of survival. Sometimes one has to make decisions that seem contrary to their personal values and beliefs in order to move in the desired direction.

He was hardly a normal teenager with all those scholarships and success in studies you mention in chapter 1.
I am not trying to imply that knowledge necessitates moral rectitude or that Daneel must be a morally upright person in order to be a protagonist but that this whole "memories of studies from Earth" trope and his resultant intellectual genius require even more suspension of belief if his knowledge is so selectively against moral reflection. Please do not mistake my commentary on Daneel's moral character as commentary on you either personally or as an author. View More

KillerHemboy: He was just a normal teenager before transmigration...his memories are clearer due to training, but he's still in the process of what it means to be a king, or a world dominator in this case. This is one phase in his growth ie it's where he's at right now.

Only those who have care of the common good can ordain the harm of one individual for the good of (in your example, the protection of) the many. However, that justification does not come from accumulation of numbers, but from the good of order, namely the good of the whole as the whole. Daneel is king of Lanthanor and not of elsewhere, and as such does not wield this authority outside of his own kingdom (not that he can wield it arbitrarily in Lanthanor without moral implications). In direct response to your suggestion: I would not murder to save someone, even millions, but not all killing is murder. "To kill" is never a sufficient description of the act in relation to reason, by means of which something acquires its moral character.
Further, I myself am not purporting that there are "bottom lines." Good is to be done and pursued; evil is to be shunned and avoided. That is the first principle of all practical reasoning. The very notion of a "bottom line" is just a way for consequentialists to mollify those who find their reasoning repugnant. After all, by their purported principles one can kill an innocent man in order to save those millions of lives you mentioned.
Third, whether or not he is killing them remains to be seen (from previous chapters, this does seem to be his intention). He has killed others in cold-blood (as opposed to the heat of passion), such as the Mad Doctor's son and the son's companions. I would propose that not all of these were cases of proportionate self-defense. On the other hand, dishonesty is not without its own moral implications even apart from homicide, which is hardly the only possible wrongdoing.
Lastly, it is not by reason of being politicians but of being corrupt that politicians should be disliked. Statesmanship is a noble profession. It is only due to this high dignity that the corruption thereof is so repugnant.
If there is a forum in which you would like to continue this discussion, I would happily oblige, time permitting. View More

Krader: I have to disagree with you. If someone told you to save millions of lives including your own you had to kill a serial rapist and mass murderer it wouldn't really be much of a choice. Also what bottom line has he crossed in your mind? He isn't even killing them, he is just leading them both into a political trap. If you have learned anything on earth it should be to feel no sympathy for politicians.

"However, Daneel felt no qualms at all, as he knew that sometimes, actions shouldn't be looked at on the surface. Instead, what should also be taken into consideration was whether the targets deserved it, and whether the end result would be beneficial on the whole, while not violating any inviolable bottom lines."
How... conveniently consequentialist...
And those must be pretty low "inviolable bottom lines." I am somewhat disappointed that someone purported to have studied practically the whole intellectual tradition of Earth has such vast gaps in his moral reasoning. View More
