Just love the scheming diabolical nature of Lucius. Wonder what kind of devilish trap Lucius has laid? Holding Bethany as a hostage would provide great long term leverage for the Ianis family - even better would be to turn her against her own parents and have her denounce them like in Stalinist show trials. Think Stockholm syndrome.

Interestingly enuf for me the climax of this 2 chapter fight scene is when Bethany is declared a traitor. The dialogue between her and the diabolical Lucius conveyed more emotion and excitement than the whacking off of heads. Truly a sage!

Normally I prefer a heroic mc like in author's book,Walker of Worlds, but in this case the ruthless mc is given a gift that should force him to cooperate w others close to him. evolution has bestowed on most of us a genome that has the same effect & whether a person cooperates, i.e. Like in an iterative prisoners dilemma game, out of the goodness of his heart Or for personal gain in the end doesn't make any difference. Bravo to the author for a sophisticated take on a common Webnovel trope.
