Two possible in story reason for the discrepancy. 1. the king doesn't really know the value of things, therefore thought it was a lot. 2. the king doesn't care because William is useless to him and gave him an "large" amount of money and sent him to die. Number 2 happens in isekai manga from time to time. Especially with less then honorable/truthful rulers.
